Making the Grade Thursday 27 th September The following slides contain important information to support students in their final year in Mathematics at Varndean. We look forward to seeing students, parents and carers at the Making the Grade evening, where you will have the opportunity to collect the first revision booklet for this year, as well as a tracker card, to show which of the resources that will be offered have been completed (practise means progress). Students will need to complete each task, prior to receiving the next one and will have their tracker card stamped to show this has been done. There will also be the opportunity to ask any questions in an informal setting, so please ask, we are keen to support in any way that we can. Nicola Raven (Head of Mathematics)

Key points to consider: Common factors impacting on marks awarded for the final GCSE

Key points to consider: Common factors impacting on marks awarded for the final GCSE exams • practise arithmetic processes; particular short division, times tables, square numbers, cube numbers and negative number arithmetic • ensure that all working is shown in a logical, ordered fashion and can be easily read • learn and be able to recall metric conversions, for example, 1 kg is 1000 g • remember to divide by two when finding the area of a triangle, i. e. use 1⁄2 × base × height • practise estimating values to calculations by first rounding given values • present working legibly and in an organised way on the page so that the order of the process of solution is clear and unambiguous • show all working out particularly in questions where this is explicitly stated • ensure that they are familiar with the correct use of their calculator • practise writing clear explanations, bearing in mind exactly what is asked in the question and what evidence should be given to support the answer.
