Marine Species- The plants, animals and other organisms that live in the salt water

Marine Species- The plants, animals and other organisms that live in the salt water of the sea or ocean.

Task One: You are going to be looking at how different marine species have

Task One: You are going to be looking at how different marine species have adapted [the process of changing to suit different conditions] to living in different layers of the ocean.

Red Group- Red hat- How does learning about the different zones make you feel?

Red Group- Red hat- How does learning about the different zones make you feel? Orange group- Write all the reasons why you think it’s important that animals adapt to where they are living? Green Group- How might ocean life be affected negatively? Copy out the bridge map. Sunlight Zone Abyss as Twilight Zone as as Trench Midnight Zone

Add to your bridge map Sunlight Zone • Seaweed which is actually a type

Add to your bridge map Sunlight Zone • Seaweed which is actually a type of algae that lives in salt water habitats. • One adaptation of some seaweeds is that they have anchors (not literal) that can help them attach to rocks or pieces of driftwood. These anchors allow them to remain in one place even when strong waves could push them around. Challenge: Can you find another adaptation of seaweed ?

Add to your bridge map Twilight Zone • Octopus’ can be found in the twilight zone- with no sunlight. • One adaptation is they can camouflage, which is when an animal blends into its surroundings. They can change their own colour and texture to hide. • If they're attacked, they can use poisonous chemicals to hide from predators and kill their prey. As a last resort, they can even lose an arm and later regenerate, meaning regrow it! Challenge: Can you find another adaptation of an octopus ?

Add to your bridge map Midnight Zone • Greenland sharks can be found in

Add to your bridge map Midnight Zone • Greenland sharks can be found in the midnight zone. • One adaptation is an excellent sense of smell - being almost blind because of those eye parasites and living in the dark depths of the ocean anyway where there is no light, the sharks use their excellent smell to seek out prey and carrion to feed on. Challenge: Can you find another adaptation of a Greenland shark ?

Add to your bridge map Abyss • Starfish can be found in the abyss.

Add to your bridge map Abyss • Starfish can be found in the abyss. • One adaptation of a starfish is that they too like an octopus can regenerate amputated limbs after an attack in the dangerous marine environment. Challenge: Can you find another adaptation of a starfish ?

Add to your bridge map Trench • A cusk eel can be found in

Add to your bridge map Trench • A cusk eel can be found in the abyss. • One adaptation of a cusk eel is their ventral fins. Ventral fins help in controlling movement. Challenge: Can you find another adaptation of a cusk eel ?

Task 2: Red Group- Create an poster all about one of the living things

Task 2: Red Group- Create an poster all about one of the living things you have learnt about today. You must include a definition of what adaptation means. You must also include a white hat. Orange Group- Using your bridge map, I want you to go through the five living things and explain why their adaption is important. I expect two sentences for each living thing. Green group- Using the what if key- I want you to think about what would happen to the living things you have learnt about today- what if they didn’t adapt to their environment? Go through each living thing. Extra challenge next slide
