Lesson 7: Holderness and Swanage Case Study Lesson Objective: To produce a detailed case study on an area of coastal management
MAPLETON- HOLDERNESS Mappleton is on the Holdeness coast and the cliffs are made of boulder clay and were eroding very quickly. The village was in danger, and several houses had been lost. However the B 1242 road link was in danger and this made it economically viable to build sea defences. An offshore bar of granite was built at the cost of £ 2 million. This prevented erosion at Mappleton but prevented material moving southwards.
GREAT COWDEN At Great Cowden erosion was less than 2 m p. a. until the Mappleton defences were put in place. In two years, an acre of land has been lost, and the coast has eroded 80 m.
SUE EARL’S FARM Sue Earle's farmhouse was knocked down in 1997 as it was at the cliff edge and was considered dangerous. It cost the Earle's £ 3000 for the privilege. Coastal Management Zone (ICZM) Planners are trying to find sustainable ways of managing the coasts -to reduce the damage to the environment. Planners are treating the whole of the coastal areas from the shore line to several kilometres inland (holistic approach) Holderness area, Yorkshire is part of the EAST RIDING ICZM plan, introduced in 2002 Set out to protect some areas form erosion and other areas ‘do nothing’ approach taken Local people were not happy, they argued the local social and economic needs were being ignored
Where is Swanage? Using the maps- locate Swanage Bay Geographically.
What are the options? In the UK, local councils pay for sea defences. Some may get money from the Government or Environment Agency if there is a flood risk. There are 4 choices councils can make: 1. Hold the line use sea defences to stop erosion EXPENSIVE 2. Advance the line use sea defences to move the coast further into the sea VERY EXPENSIVE 3. Strategic Retreat gradually let the coast erode and move people away from risks. This may involve compensation for some people 4. Do nothing let nature take its course. These choices can cause conflicts. Choices 3 and 4 will see people loose land, homes and businesses. One stretch of coastline may involve several choices.
