OVERVIEW � What’s new in Title 5? � What may be coming? � What Title 5 Sections do you most need to be familiar with? � How do you find what you’re looking for in Title 5?

WHAT’S NEW IN TITLE 5? � Repeatability � Changes are primarily to classes that are repeatable, not to circumstances when students can repeat � Only three types of classes remain repeatable � Intercollegiate athletics � Required to be transferable to get a B. A. � Directly tied to intercollegiate academic or vocational competition

WHAT’S NEW IN TITLE 5? � Repeatability � Related changes � “Significant Lapse of Time” � Athletics 350 hour rule � Four takes within a family for PE and performing arts —regardless of success � Changes will go into effect in Fall 2013

WHAT’S NEW IN TITLE 5? � Repetition � Change came last year but will be enforced as of this summer � A student will have three enrollments per class, including withdrawls � Fourth attempt may be allowed but will not receive apportionment

WHAT’S NEW IN TITLE 5? � Instructional � Sections Materials 59400, 59402, 59404, 59406, and 59408 all revised, though some in minor ways � Students must have option of continued access to electronic materials for up to two years � “Required instructional materials shall not include materials used or designed primarily for administrative purposes, class management, course management or supervision. ” � Instructors are required to take reasonable steps to minimize the cost and ensure the necessity of instructional materials

WHAT MAY BE COMING? � Changes � Top to enrollment priorities order has not changed (veterans, foster youth, EOPS/DSPS) � Lose priority over 100 degree-applicable units � Lose priority on probation (academic or progress) � Require orientation and placement to the degree you can

WHAT TITLE 5 SECTIONS DO YOU MOST NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH? � Section 53200 (b) � Defines � Section � Lists and empowers academic senates 53200 (c) the 10+1 � Section 53200 (d) � Defines “consult collegially, ” “primarily rely, ” and “mutually agree”

WHAT TITLE 5 SECTIONS DO YOU MOST NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH? � Section 53203 � Defines Academic senate powers �Further definitions of primarily rely and mutually agree. �Senate’s right to speak directly to the board �Senate’s right to make appointments to all bodies dealing with academic and professional matters

WHAT TITLE 5 SECTIONS DO YOU MOST NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH? � Section 55002 � Defines the curriculum committee and how it is to be formed � Defines the role of the curriculum committee in recommending curriculum � Defines standards for credit, noncredit, and community service courses

WHAT TITLE 5 SECTIONS DO YOU MOST NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH? � Section 53021 � Requirements for recruitment of all positions, including both faculty and administration � Recruitment exceptions � Interim positions

HOW DO YOU FIND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR? � Title 5 Search Strategies � First search that comes up expects you to know what you are looking for: Title and section � Additional Options: � Search for Words � Search Within a Specific Title

HOW DO YOU FIND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR? � “Word Search” covers all of regulations, so you get a lot of results � “Within a Title” is a more specific word search, but still covers all of Title 5, which is all segments of education � Community College Section of T 5 is the 50000 band, so you can skip to results with those numbers � Put quotation marks around the phrase you are searching for

HOW DO YOU FIND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR? � The best way to find things in Title 5 is to familiarize yourself with the document. It is organized into fairly logical sections. � Make note of the references you find so that you can search by section next time. It is much faster that way. � You can always ask for help or guidance from ASCCC.
