Learning for everyone… Aims and Objectives Ø To look specifically at the employee rights and responsibilities surrounding your business sector Ø To develop a wider range of skills and knowledge that will allow formal assessment of this unit, in particular learning outcome 2.

Learning for everyone… Rights and responsibilities Ø Both employees and employers have legal rights.

Learning for everyone… Rights and responsibilities Ø Both employees and employers have legal rights. Ø An employer’s rights are the employee’s responsibilities (and vice versa). Ø Some legal rights are statutory. This means everyone has them. Ø Some legal rights are contractual. These are rights stated in the contract of employment.

These are the express terms (hours, holidays etc. ) Ø Comply with the implied terms – so obvious they are not stated (honesty, working towards the objectives of the organisation, etc). Ø Comply with all health and safety rules.

Ø The Sex Discrimination Act/Race Relations Act and Disability Discrimination Act – it is illegal to discriminate on grounds of gender, race or disability. Ø The Working Time Regulations – restricts working hours for most employees.
