Brief History of Department The discipline of Social and Preventive Medicine started, as part time subject, functioning at State Health Institute (SHI) as “State Medicine” in 1915. The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine was created by GO of Govt. UP dated 26. 12. 1957. On 15 th March 1958 the full time Department of Social and Preventive Medicine was started and Prof B. G. Prasad took over as first Head of Department. In recognition of the excellent work of the department, the Government of India, upgraded the department in 1972. It is a matter of great honour to note that Prof. B. G. Prasad the first full time Head of the department has earned recognition and respect for the department not only in this state, both at national and international level.

LAND MARKS OF THE DEVELOPMENT Year Land Marks 1911 KG’s Medical college , Lucknow was established 1915 Part- time department of State Medicine was established in erstwhile Provincial Hygiene Institute and the first part- time professor of hygiene was appointed 1952 The part time department was re-designated as Social medicine and Public health 1957 The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine was created by GO of Govt. UP dated 26. 12. 1957 1958 The department of Social and Preventive Medicine was established with full time professor, and a Rural Field Practice Area at Sarojini Nagar, 16 Kms. From Lucknow on Kanpur Road. 1960 Residential Rural Internship was started at Sarojini Nagar. 1961 First M. D. Social and Preventive Medicine was awarded 1963 DPH course was started. Urban Health Center at Alambagh, 8 Kms from Lucknow was established and additional teaching and field staff recruited. 1996 PGDMCH-IGNOU, New Delhi Started 2007 Infectious Diseases Hospital is attached to this Department 2008 Department has been identified by NACO/UPSACS as Centre of Excellence for STI/RTI Trainings. 2009 Department has been identified for GFATM Project by Indian Nursing Council for training of Nurses

LAND MARKS OF THE DEVELOPMENT Year Cont…… Land Marks 2009 Upgraded Department of Community Medicine changed to Upgraded Department of Community Medicine & Public Health by Executive Council of this University 2010 MD Seats increased 3 to 5 2011 Department has been recognized by GOI/NCDC as one of the ten National Institutes for training in IDSP 2011 The Department has been recognized by WHO-SEARO as Training Institute for conducting Public Health Management Programme for WHO fellows 2012 Department has been identified as Regional Centre for Trainings of NVBDCP 2013 MD Seats increased 5 to 7 2014 -15 KGMU Institute of Nursing started under supervision of this Department from session 2015 -16 with 100 Seats of B. Sc. (N) and 10 Seats of M. Sc.
