Chem Bulletin @Chemistry Department, Manipal University Jaipur Volume 2/ Issue 2 January-July, 2014 National Conference on Recent Trends in Research in Chemical Sciences (RTRCS) February 21 – 22, 2014 A National Conference on Recent Trends in Research in Chemical Science (RTRCS 2014) was organized by the Department of Chemistry, Manipal University Jaipur from February 21 -22, 2014. The conference was financially supported by SERB, DST, Govt. of India. There were 15 invited lectures, 18 oral presentations and 43 poster presentations in the conference. The selected papers are under publication in a Book titled “Research Methodology in Chemical Sciences: Experimental and Theoretical Approaches” by Apple Academic Press and distributed by Taylor & Francis Group. Distinguished Scientists and Academicians of the likes of Prof. Arun Chattopadhyay (IIT Guwahati), Prof. Mangala Sunder Krishnan (IIT Madras), Prof. Samita Basu (SINP, Kolkata), Dr. S. K. Nema (IPR, Gandhinagar), Prof. D. C. Ghosh (UGC Emeritus Professor, BESU, West Bengal), Prof. R. T. Pardasani (Central University of Rajasthan), Prof. R. K. Sharma (University of Delhi), Prof. Anshu Dandia (University of Rajasthan), Prof. S. Arunachalam (Bharathidasan University, Tiruhirappali), Dr. S. Raja (IISER, Kolkata), Prof. Dr. Ram Prakash (CEERI, Pilani), Dr. Virendra Singh (NIT, Jalandhar) and Dr. Purnendu Parhi, (Ravenshaw University, Cuttack) were invited to deliver lectures in the conference. The oral and poster presentations included delegates from IISER, Kolkata, IIT Roorkee, BITS Pilani, IIT Delhi, BITS Deoghar, University of Delhi and from various institutes in and around Jaipur. Volume 2/ Issue 2 Instruments Procured January-July, 2014 Scientific Instruments such as Rotary Evaporator, Aniline Point Apparatus, Digital Cloud Point & Pour Point Apparatus, Pensky Martin Flash Point & Fire Point Apparatus, Ultrasonic Cleaner, Redwood Viscometer No. 1 and 2, Bomb Calorimeter have been procured in last six months. Papers presented by Dr. Tanmoy Chakraborty 1. Titled “QSAR Studies of Nano Bio-Active Compounds Invoking DFT Based Quantum Mechanical Descriptors” at Workshop on Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships in Environmental and Health Sciences (QSAR 2014), held from June 16 -20, 2014 at the IRCCS Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri”, Milan. Dr. Chakraborty’s visit to Italy was financially supported by DST-SERB under the category of International Travel Support. 2. Titled " QSAR Study of Chlorofuranone derivatives Invokine DFT Descriptors" at Manipal Research Colloquium held at Manipal University, Udupi from April 11 -12, 2014. 3. Titled “Theoretical Approach towards the Drug Designing; invoking DFT Based at 2 nd Rajasthan Science Congress held from May 1 -3, 2014 at Dr. K. N. Modi University, Niwai. 4. Titled “A Theoretical Analysis of Bi-metallic (Cu-Ag)n=1 -7 Nano Alloy Clusters Invoking DFT based Descriptors” at Virtual Conference on Computational Chemistry (VCCC 2014), held on August 16, 2014, University of Mauritius. 5. Participated in Poster Conference with the poster on Computational study of Nano-materials Invoking DFT based descriptors held on April 25, 2014, Budapest, Hungary. 6. Titled “A Study of Drug-Receptor Interaction through DFT Based Local Descriptors” at Agriculture, Food Engineering and Environmental Sciences-Sustainable Approaches” (AFEESSA- 2014), held from March 29 -30, 2014 at the JNU, Delhi. Refresher/Short term Courses Attended Dr. Babita Malik Participated in refresher course in chemistry from January 27 - February 15, 2014 organized by UGC Academic staff college, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. Dr. Lalita Ledwani completed two MOOC courses on University Teaching-10 and Introduction to Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage organized by The John Hopkins University and Ecole Polytechnique Federale De Lausanne In Collaboration with Sandec/Eawag respectively and received certificates of achievement for the same. Dr. Nitu Bhatnagar completed two MOOC course on Innovation for Powerful Outcomes and Chemistry–Building Blocks of the World and received certificate of achievement from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. Papers Presented by Dr. Nitu Bhatnagar 1. Titled "High Performance Polymeric Nano composites for Biomedical Applications" at Manipal Research Colloquium held at Manipal University, Udupi from April 11 -12, 2014. Dr. Bhatnagar received 2 nd Prize among oral presentations in technical session & medical health session group organized by Directorate, Manipal Research Colloquium. 2. Titled “Thermal Sprayed Alumina Nanocoatings for Corrosion Prevention” at an International Conference ICBCP’ 14 held at Kualalumpur from March 27 -28, 2014. Dr. Bhatnagar chaired a technical session too at the conference ICBCP’ 14. 3. Titled “Comparing the Efficacy of Characterization Techniques for Surface Modified Polymer” AICON’ 14 held at CSIT, Durg (C. G. ) from April 25 -26, 2014 as a Key Note Speaker and chaired one technical session. Paper Presented in Conferences Dr. Rahul Shrivastava presented a paper titled “Selective recognition and extraction of uranyl ion by macrocyclic based tripodal receptor” at 16 th CRSI National Symposium in chemistry and 8 th RSC-CRSI symposium in Chemistry, organized by Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay from February 6 -9, 2014. Dr. Arunava Agarwala, presented a paper titled “Modification of Si. O 2 nanoparticles by organo-boron compounds” at 16 th CRSI National Symposium in chemistry and 8 th RSC-CRSI symposium in Chemistry, organized by Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay from February 6 -9, 2014. .

Thesis Submitted Mr. Hemen Dave had submitted Ph. D. Thesis titled “ Study of Plasma Surface Modification of Polymers, Biomaterials and Their Characterization” under the supervision of Dr. Lalita Ledwani (Guide) and Dr. S. K. Ms. Richa Singh, Guide: Dr. Lalita Ledwani INSPIRE Camp A five days Department of Science and Technology, Government of India sponsored INSPIRE Camp was organized by Manipal University from July 21 -25, 2014. The camp was attended by around 150 students of various schools from all over Rajasthan state. In technical sessions, there were lectures on “SATCOM” by Dr. Amita Gill, Director, DST Rajasthan, “Unleash your Creativity” and “Why do we need to learn Mathematics? ” by Prof. T. P. Singh, PDPU, Gujarat; “Paleontology & a reconnaissance visit to sedimentary basins west of Aravalli axis” by Prof. D. K. Pandey, UOR; “Genomics of the Y chromosomes & Human health” by Prof. Sher Ali, NII, New Delhi; “About Science as a Career” & “Evolution of Himalayas” by Prof. Ram Sharma, Honorary Scientist, INSA; “ Nature & Scope of Life Sciences” by Prof. P. K. Goel, UOR; “Chemistry & Life and “New Excitements in Chemistry” by Prof. R. T. Pardasani, CUR; “Engineering of Life” by Prof. P. Ghosh, BISR, Rajasthan; “Sustainable Development” by Prof. Prabha Dasora; “Photonics” by Prof. Y. K. Vijay, VGU, Rajasthan; “Nanobiotechnogy- future prospective” by Prof. S. L. Kothari, UOR. In afternoon sessions, participants were enlightened with Hands-on experience and experimental demonstrations by Shri Dhananjay Rawal, Gujarat and Shri A. K. Shrivastava, Rajasthan, followed by practical sessions in different laboratories. Participants also had a chance to visit Birla Planetarium on the 4 th day of the camp. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the participating students by Prof. A. P. Singh, VC, Central University of Rajasthan during the valedictory function. Department of Chemistry has participated actively for successful organization of the camp. Dr. Lalita Ledwani, HOD, Chemistry worked as a convener of the camp.
