Role, Purpose and Legal Powers • IPSO’s role is to regulate press and journalist content in printed media – specifically newspaper and magazines • Investigates complaints • They can make Newspapers/Magazines make adjustments and changes if the editors code is broken • They also provide advice for editors and journalists • Investigate serious standards failings and fine up to £ 1, 000 for severe cases • The fine requires the companies to pay for the investigation • Can terminate the membership to IPSO • It is not completely independent as it is funded by the publishing companies that it regulates

Case Study • The Guardian reported that The Times were censored by IPSO for publishing an inaccurate statement: “Fifa isn’t the only fiefdom to cast its shadow” published on the 1 st June 2015. • The Times also had to pay a fine for not coming up with a better remedy for the “serious unsubstantiated claim”. • The Times writer Mat Ridley made serious claims about Fifa without any evidence being presented in his report. • As well as this, The Sun headline ‘ 1 in 5 Brit Muslims’ Sympathy for jihadis’ which was based on a survey that was done by Survation who's methods have been since criticized. • IPSO’s policy means that because there was allot of complaints they choose a lead complaint which they have dubbed Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND). • This lead to an investigation from IPSO into The Sun.

Controversy • IPSO came into question when a Katie Hopkins column compared migrants to “cockroaches”. • 2000 complaints were rejected as ‘bad taste’ is not something IPSO regulate • They also said that “migrants could not be viewed as victims of discrimination even when being compared to cockroaches” • Even the chairman was disappointed with the lack of action taken by the board.
