Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), is a government agency setup as the apex standards body in Nigeria. Key responsibilities are developing standards, quality regulation and advising government on matters relating to standardization. Who we are. .
SON was established by Act No 56 of 1971 based on the government policy on Standards, Metrology, Quality assurance of both locally manufactured and imported products and services. Currently , the institution is governed by SON’s act of 2015 replacing the old act of 1971 as amended. We now have official representation in 36 states of the country. With the Operational Headquarters in Lagos and Cooperate Hq in the country’s capital of Abuja. Brief History/Background

Standard: A standard is an agreed level of quality. NIS Nigerian Industrial Standards: document established by consensus and approved by the Nigerian Standards Council, which is SON’s governing body. It is a document that prescribes the necessary criteria to ensure that a product is fit for the purpose for which it was created. COMMITEES: constituted of Technical secretary, relevant experts and other stakeholders in the private and public sector, including government agencies, consumer association, research/lab institutions etc. MANCAP-(Mandatory Conformity Assessment Program ): to ensure compliance to NIS, through compliance procedures, inspection, sampling and testing. Voluntary Product Certification Scheme (NIS Mark Of Quality). Nigerian Quality Award Scheme (NQA) and SONCAP- (Standards Organization of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Program). All products except Food, Drugs(medicines). medical equipment and machines, military wares , chemicals used as raw material for manufacture and goods classified as contraband by the Nigerian Government. Nigeria is mostly into the production of alcoholic beverages such as spirits, beer and palm wine. It is generally a consumer nation Wines are regulated by Nafdac : Labeling requirements, packaging materials, food safety and quality requirements to confirm compliance with the Nafdac guidelines. Nigerian Customs services, inspects at the ports as well and ensures all import duties are paid. Nigeria is a member of ARSO, CODEX, ECOWAS, ISO as well as WTO/TBT agreement which harmonizes technical regulations, standards and conformity assessment procedures. Brief on wine Regulations
