Hello Year 1. Happy Friday! Today is Friday 15 th May. We are going to be learning to calculate totals using repeated addition.
Mental Maths Warm-Up Can you remember how to count in time intervals of quarter hours? Quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. Start from 9 o’clock… Quarter past 9… Try on you own starting from Half past 9… 2 o’clock. Quarter to 10… 10 o’ clock… Quarter past 10… Try again starting from Half past 10… 5 o’clock. Quarter to 11… 11 o’clock
Repeated addition + + Let’s count in fives from 0 to 20. 5, 10, 15, 20. How many fives did we count? So… 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 So… we say 4 fives are 20. So… 5 x 4 = 20 x
Repeated addition + + Now let’s count in 2’s to 10. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 How many two’s did we count? So… 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 So… we say 5 two’s are 10. So… 2 x 5 = 10 x
Repeated addition can be written as a multiplication sentence. So…if we count in tens to 50. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 How many tens did we count? So… 10 + 10 = 50 So. . . we say 5 tens are 50 So… 10 x 5 = 50
Repeated addition and multiplication Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 2+2= 2 x 2= 2+2+2+2= 2 x 4= 2+2+2= 2 x 3= 5+5+5= 5 x 3= 2+2+2+2= 2 x 4 = 5+5+5+5= 5 x 4= 2+2+2= 2 x 5= 5+5+5+5+5= 5 x 5= 10 + 10 + 10 = 10 x 4 = 10 + 10 = 10 x 5 Miss Harding thinks 4 fives are 25. Is she correct?
Extra worksheets… • Some of you have requested more worksheets for your child to work through after the Power Point lesson. • Some additional worksheets for this week have been emailed to you via your class rep. We hope you find these useful.
