FMD progress plan 1. Update, revise all simulations for actual geometry and beam pipe layout (started, in progress) 2. Explore details of Si layout and manufacture details with companies (started, in progress) 3. Explore in simulations consequence of ITS cabling. Not started yet, but now in principle possible to start after first ITS materials balance by P. L. Barberi. 4. Once Si manufacture details and specs are clearer, return to IDEAS and fix more detailed specs for FE electronics (after summer 2002) 5. Develop drawings for mounting of Si detectors onto interface agreed with ITS (3 rd cone etc. . . ). Interface not yet fully agreed. Fall 2002 6. Describe integration and installation sequence. Still far from clear. Hand in hand with ITS.

FMD 7. Define cabling better. Must wait for next round of discussing with FE company. 8. Move towards ordering of prototype Si and FE system. (fall 2002) 9. Start work defining Back End (BE) electronics and interfacing with DAQ. We are missing people for this. Some discussion with 2 potential groups (Zagreb , Krakow) are in progress. Outcome unsure at this moment. (fall 2002). 10. First prototyping and test with e-beam. (early 2003). 11. Prototype test at RHIC/BRAHMS (late 2003 - RHIC run IV). I would believe that the time for a TDR is between items 9 and 10. This realistically brings us into the late spring of 2003.

FWD detectors: TDR status - A draft (v 1. 3) of the FMD document was distributed at last ALICE week next version will soon appear on our Web page. - A recent - not yet published - ALICE note on V 0 will be forwarded to BSN. - The published ALICE note on T 0 needs updating before it can be turned into a draft for the T 0 TDR. - In the September ALICE week, we should have the next versions of 3 separate documents. Discuss the structure of the combined document. - The aim is to have a draft TDR in December 2002, and an edited draft in February 2003.

Action items • Clarify installation issues between beam pipe, ITS and FMD by end of 2002. • F. Tosello to give an update on ITS services at September TB • F. Tosello and A.
