Take your writing up a level! Last week, you wrote a passionate piece about protecting endangered animals, keeping the seas clear of pollution, keeping our countryside beautiful and protecting care homes – to name but a few of your chosen topics. This week, you are going to take it a step further. The topic will not be so weighty – I don’t want to test your knowledge, I want you to show off fabulous language and the right structure! This is Malala. Another pioneer, she fights for education for girls. Year Four Writing Criteria. Our focus for this week: how to plan, revise and evaluate your writing write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting your language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences organising paragraphs around a theme read your own writing aloud to a group or the whole class, using appropriate intonation and controlling the tone and volume so that the meaning is clear

It is a BBC bitesize clip about how to influence someone or change their opinion. You used some of those devices they mentioned last week: Emotional and passionate language Rhetorical questions Facts and statistics Opinion Now lets add in a few more: First person Counter argument Balanced review But remember not to fall into the trap of using language that is too informal and chatty!

Devices / techniques Greta and Nelson Mandela used to persuade their audience: Repetition – How dare you? I do not to believe that/ and that I refuse to believe Rhetorical questions – How dare you look away and say that you are doing enough? Emotion – I am the lucky one. People are dying! Entire ecosystems are failing! You be that great generation! Facts and Statistics – For 30 years, the science has been clear. Rule of Three – Never, never and never again I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want…. You could also include: Opinions - I think that, it must be said that Exaggeration – Act as if the house was on fire The whole world has risen up to say we must act.

Bank of devices: Introduction (say what you are going to say) Rhetorical questions Facts

Bank of devices: Introduction (say what you are going to say) Rhetorical questions Facts and proof Emotional/powerful language Opinion Rule of Three Counter argument Balanced review at end (sum up what you have said) What is a counter argument? Well, you think ahead and make a sensible guess as to what people might say to disagree with you. Then you use your bank of devices to show them that they are wrong! Structure: E. g. Some people say that the Sun is switched off at night time, however scientists have proven that the Earth rotates in its orbit around the Sun and so there are times when the Sun’s light is not visible to us. Introduction 3 paragraphs (3 main ideas) Conclusion E. g. 2 Why should children have free school dinners, I hear you ask? Well, we all know that children think and learn better when they have had enough to eat. I am going to have a go at thinking of a few arguments on the next slide so that you can see what sort of thing is expected.

My persuasive writing is to convince my parents that a pet is a good

My persuasive writing is to convince my parents that a pet is a good idea! Three arguments Counter arguments from my parents To keep me company, reduce stress You can have hugs from us Scientists have proven that stroking pets makes you feel calm When everyone is busy working, a dog could be my friend It would cheer me up when I feel sad We both work so the animal would get lonely You have brothers and sisters to keep you company To make me responsible You always forget to do things I would be in charge of feeding it and grooming it I would check on it and keep it healthy I would love it so I would look after it carefully, not just for the first week! You can’t keep your bedroom tidy, let alone look after an animal You never remember to take your PE kit to school – what if you forget about your pet? Pets live a long time. To ensure that I exercise You never want to go out in the rain I would make sure that it was healthy and exercised every day It would mean that I exercised too – a healthy me too! It is good to spend time outside, away from screens You in the rain? Early mornings? Last thing at night? Hmmm, exercise would be good though…. . Now I need to start thinking about a punchy title and how I want to introduce the idea to my audience.

You can adopt my idea if you want – think how you can express

You can adopt my idea if you want – think how you can express the arguments in a persuasive manner. Or you can choose a subject of your choice. E. g. school uniform, packed lunches Think of at least three strong reasons for your argument. Can you think of what people might say if they disagree? What is a punchy title for your writing? What devices will you use? When you have gathered your thoughts, start to think about how you can write these ideas in a way that will persuade people! NB you do not have to write it all out today – you have tomorrow for that! Today is just to write your list and think of a punchy title and some good phrases.
