The Sun also Rises • depicts a group of American and British expatriates travelling to a festival in Spain (interested in watching bullfights) • the main character: Jake Barnes, expatriate American journalist living in Paris • a war wound renders him impotent • he is in love with Lady Brett Ashley, an independent, twicedivorced woman notorious for numerous love affairs • she loves Jake but she is unwilling to give up sex • she leaves for Spain, where she has several love affairs and intimate relationships with other men • Jake arrives in Spain and has an argument with his friend Cohn, who also had an affair with Brett • the book finishes with Jake and Brett in a taxi discussing their ruined and frustrated romance

The Old Man and the Sea • main protagonist: Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman • an epic story about the struggle between Santiago and the greatest fish of his life • Santiago unable to catch a fish for 84 days • his devoted apprentice (Manolin) is forced by his parents to leave Santiago and work in a more prosperous boat • Manolin feels sorry about Santiago because he considers himself to be his friend • Santiago decides to sail farther than other fishermen with the hope of catching a big fish

The Old Man and the Sea • he gets into the Gulf Stream and manages to hook a monster fish • tries to pull the fish in and the fish pulls the boat • Santiago struggles with the fish for almost 3 days, enduring tiredness, pain caused by fishing line he was bearing, deprived of sleep but unwilling to give up • on the third day he succeeded in getting the fish closer and killing it • being excited about the price of the fish at the market, he is also doubtful if people deserve such a great fish that was struggling for its life so much • he sails back with fish but its blood attracts sharks

The Old Man and the Sea • Santiago manages to kill the first shark with a harpoon but loses it in the fight • with no harpoon he becomes vulnerable to other shark attacks but he does not give up and stabs sharks with a knife attached to an oar or beats them with the tiller of the boat • by the time he reaches the land, only a skeleton of the fish is left • Santiago is so exhausted that he goes straight to his shack and sleeps deeply • the skeleton attracts the attention of other fishermen • owing to Santiagoʼs three-day absence and the skeleton of the fish, Manio is worried about Santiago and gets so relieved finding him sleeping in his bed • both of them agree to become partners again and start fishing together
