Review Example Paragraph Response The invocation of Homer’s The Odyssey highlights Odysseus’ strengths as a character which support his consideration as an epic hero. Odysseus is a superior competitor and a wily combatant. The invocation of the poem highlights this aspect of Odysseus’ character in the epithet Homer uses to refer to him. In line 2 of the poem, the poet refers to Odysseus as a man, “skilled in all ways of contending. ” This reveals that he is talented at various forms of fighting or overcoming challenges, suggesting that he is competitive and has survived numerous challenges along his journey. This quality of his character supports his consideration as an epic hero. In addition, Book One reveals Odysseus’ determination and will to survive. In the invocation, Homer’s description of the obstacles Odysseus overcomes reveals his strong-willed nature and resolve. In the invocation to the muse, the poet describes Odysseus as being, “harried for years on end” (3) and says that Odysseus “weathered many bitter nights and days. . at sea” (8 -9). This informs the reader that Odysseus suffered through difficulties for many years but “weathered” or survived them without suffering lasting harm. Although Odysseus is described as having suffered for years and overcomes the deaths of his men, he continues to fight against obstacles to “save his life” (10), demonstrating the determination that contributes to his identification as an epic hero. The invocation characterizes Odysseus as a skilled combatant and a determined survivor, highlighting two of his major strengths as an epic hero.

The Odyssey Book Nine Review Notes • In Book Eight, Odysseus washes up on the shores of the Phaecians and tells their king, Alcinous, of his adventures up to that time (events related through flashback). • Odysseus starts by explaining his qualities - “men hold me formidable for guile in peace and war” (7 -8) - and where he is from (Ithaca). • Odysseus and his men have sacked (looted) the city of the Cicones and visited the island of the Lotus eaters. • After rescuing several of his men from the Lotus eaters, Odysseus and his men journey to the island of the Cyclopes where each one “dwells in his own mountain cave…indifferent to what the others do” (65 -67). • Some of Odysseus’ men plead with him to take the cheeses, lambs, and goats of one of the Cyclopes and run back to their ship, but he insists on seeing one of the giant Cyclopes for himself. This reveals some of Odysseus’ traits: curiosity and pride (125 -132).
