¿Qué es el pretérito? The preterit tense is a past tense that expresses an event that happened and is complete. • Examples: • I eat lunch. (present) • I ate lunch. (preterit) • He speaks on the phone. (present) • He spoke on the phone. (preterit) • We drink water. (present) • We drank water. (preterit) • You teach Spanish. (present) • You taught Spanish. (preterit) • They sleep at night. (present) • They slept at night. (preterit)
¿Cómo se forma? In the preterit tense, ar verbs are formed by dropping –ar and adding the following endings: -AR preterit verbs é amos aste ------------- ó aron What do you notice about the nosotros form?

CAR, GAR, ZAR is the irregular yo of the preterit tense. SACAR JUGAR (u ue) *saqué sacamos *jugué sacaste jugaste sacó sacaron jugó ALMORZAR (o ue) jugamos *almorcé almorzamos almorzaste jugaron almorzó almorzaron • All other forms are regular. • CAR, GAR, ZAR are easy to recognize because they will only end in CAR, GAR, ZAR which are –ar verbs. • Do NOT stem-change –car, -gar, -zar. Can’t double dip!
Identical or very similar Ir (to go) and Ser (to be) conjugate the SAME. The conjugations are IDENTICAL! Ver (to see) and Dar (to give) are very similar.
