Eclipse Window Builder Ali Al-Khaz’Aly
Todays Goals • Jframe introduction • Motivation for the eclipse window builder • Install Window Builder • Build our own application for our fruits
JFrame • What is it? • A GUI library in Java using frames that you throw things onto • Do you have to use it? • Absolutely not! • Should you use it? • Yes, it will make your life easy • And I will quiz you on this
Window Builder Motivation • Working directly with JFrame and handling pixels is clunky and difficult • Purpose of window builder? • To save you time and headaches • Drag & Drop simplicity • Less time writing code, more time to designing the GUI • Very Powerful • Can be used to do many, many things in Jframe which would otherwise take us very long
Now let’s try it out!
Installing Window Builder • Does not come with eclipse, you must install it to use it • Help -> Install new software -> Work with – find releases link -> General Purpose tools -> select all Swing, SWT and Windowbuilder related • Will likely need a restart before the next step
Starting a new Window Builder application • New -> Other -> Window Builder -> Swing Designer -> Application Window • After creating it, click on the design tab, located next to the source
Layouts • Before being able to place anything, you must tell the window Builder how you want your content to be laid out, so you must select a layout • Try the different layouts for yourself!
Next Tutorial (After the break) • More window builder fun! • We will have debugger & window builder exercises in preparation for the quiz
