History of Driver Ed Instruction and VA Code Formal evaluations of U. S. high

History of Driver Ed Instruction and VA Code Formal evaluations of U. S. high school driver education programs in the 90 s and early 2000 s indicated little or no reduction in crashes per licensed driver Graduated Driver Licensing laws were put into place and significantly impacted crash risk among teenage drivers, but crash risk still remains high VA Code: “Each school board shall determine whether to offer the program of driver education in the safe operation of motor vehicles, and, if offered, whether such program shall be an elective or a required course…. the actual initial driving instruction shall be conducted…on private or public property removed from public highways if practicable…. ”

Vanessa Wigand, VDOE, “It would be a huge loss because that is one of the better programs in the state. ” Qualitative Data Jesse Turner, principal AHS, “What we did with my teachers setting up cones is no comparison to what the kids get with the range. We are always talking about real-life learning opportunities. Why would we take away that learning opportunity for students or minimize the instruction? ” Jard Schumake, coordinator of Driver Education Fairfax County, “…shame to lose it. ”

Current Program Driver Education vs Proposed State Quality Driver Education Program at all three

Current Program Driver Education vs Proposed State Quality Driver Education Program at all three high schools as evidenced by crash rates compared to others in the state and VDOE staff Three different “range” models for Behind the Wheel Proposed The proposed changes involve the multi-car range at AHS, with the biggest impact being—there are limited safe spaces for alternative“range” training. If no range was built/identified to replace the current range, there would be an impact in how teachers could deliver the training, potentially lowering the quality and safety. Increased costs in staff time
