What is the Dewey Decimal System? The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC, also called the Dewey Decimal System) is a system of library classifications developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876. This system organizes books on library shelves in a specific order that makes it easy for you to find any book and return it to its proper place.

For example, you would find a book on behavior of poisonous animals on section 500 Natural Science and math. *Books about the same subject are found on the same shelf area. *The Dewey makes it easy to find a book and also return it to the correct order. *Each book is assigned a call number which is located on the spine of the book.
