Main Characters • The main characters in this canto are Alardo de Valery, Mohammed, Ali, Fra Dolcino, Curio, Mosca, and Bertran de Born. • Alardo defeated Conradin, the nephew of Manfred, son of Fredrick II, in the town of Tagliacozzo in the year of 1268 A. D. • Mohammed is the founder of Islam and regarded by some as a renegade Christian (570 - 632 A. D. ) • Ali, the nephew and son-in-law of Mohammed, had a dispute with him and the caused the division of Islam in the Suni and Shia sects.

 • Fra Dolcino was head of a reformist group in 1300 A. D.
