Currie Community High School Risk Assessment Pedestal/Pillar Drill HAZARDS AT RISK Broken or loose drills flying out and damage to eyes from flying particles /swarf Operator / Others in the room Work piece slipping and flying out Being cut by rotating drill/chuck and or being drawn into the rotating shaft Slipping on dust Operator / Others in the room LIKELYHOOD These machines must only be operated when a qualified Technical Teacher or Technician is in the room. All operators must comply with the control measures identified below. CONTROL MEASURES RESPONSIBILITY • Suitable eye protection must be worn at all times. Operator • The machine must be fitted with a guard which covers the chuck. Teacher/ Technician / Operator • All drills must be secured with a regular chuck key and the chuck key must never be left in the chuck. Operator • Blunt or damaged drills should never be used. Teacher/ Technician / Operator • Drilling speed should be appropriate to the operation being carried out. This must only be altered when the machine power is isolated and by a qualified Technical Teacher or Technician. Teacher/ Technician • If appropriate, pilot holes should be drilled before large diameter drills are used. Operator • Before drilling metal, normal centre punching should be done. Operator • The work piece should be held securely on the table while being drilled. If a vice is being used, it should be securely held in position with the work piece firmly gripped. Teacher/ Operator • Once a pupil has set up the drill for operation, it must be checked by the teacher before use. Teacher/ Operator • Operators should not wear loose clothing and long hair must be contained so as not to be a hazard. Where clothing cannot be removed due to religious belief, every effort must be made to ensure that all loose items are contained. Teacher/ Operator • Where the table height is adjusted, it should be set to avoid excess travel of the drill. . Adjustment of the table height must only be completed by a qualified Technical Teacher or Technician. Teacher/ Technician • The drill must never be stopped by gripping the chuck. Operator • The machine should be swept down after use with the power off. Operator • The floor around the machine must be kept clear of dust and other obstructions.
