CURLING Curling is a kind of petanque on ice.
ORIGINS • It’s believed that emerged in middle age in Scotland. • The game was knowing as "the roaring game" by the sound of the stones when slide on the ice. • First, the stones were simple rocks taken from the rivers, and sometimes were polished and fitted shape. The pitcher had little control over the stone, and the game depended more on luck than strategy.
HOW IS IT PLAYED? • Two teams of four players play against each other. The objective is to throw the stone as close as is possible to the house of the sheet and they sweep the ice to control the speed of the stone.
THE SHEET • Dimensions: 45 m x 5 m • The main features of the sheet are the house, the hack, the hog line and the tee line. • It can be played in both directions.
THE STONE • Each stone weighs 42 lbs. • It is made of solid granite. • The surface of the stone that touches the ice is a narrow circular band about 1/2 inch wide. • The handle is bolted into the stone.
THE BROOM • Sweeping in front of a moving stone can affect the path of the stone and is an integral part of the game. • The sheet is wet and the water drops freeze making the sheet rough. The friction caused by the broom creates heat at the surface and facilitates the sliding of the stone.
HOW ARE POINTS SCORED? • An 'end' is over when each player on both teams have thrown all of their stones. • The goal of the game is to get your stone closest to the house. • The team whose stone has come the closest to the centre of the house wins the end. • It is possible for an end to finish with no stones in the house. • Scoring three or four points in an end is considered a high score. At the end of the game, the team with the highest number of points wins.
HOW IS IT COST TO PRACTISE THAT SPORT? • Curling is a expensive game. • A game of 16 stones costs 10000 euros, and each one of the others things (shoes, sweatshirts, brooms…) cost about 100 euros.
WHERE IS IT POPULAR? • Curling is played in cold countries that have snow. • It’s very popular in North America, specially in Canada.
CURLING IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES • Curling in the Olympic Games has 2 tournaments, one male and one female. • Each tournament consists of ten teams, facing each one against all to a single game, ranking at the top four teams semifinals.
