Introduction Cultural self-mapping ◦ Identifying those things that have made a person into the person they are today ◦ First thing for students in Kines 353 For a person to discuss diversity and culture, they need to know who they are from a diversity/cultural perspective

Importance To strategically approach diversity issues, people must begin with an exploration of their own beliefs. (Breese, 2008) Persons appear to us according to how we perceive them in our mind ◦ Groups persons belong to and how we perceive those groups

Importance How we perceive people in our mind comes from our backgrounds and who we are (cultural self) Our perceptions of people will influence our interactions with people; influence our professional practice (Cherry, 2018)

Instructions List on the bones of the fish, things that have made you into the person you are today ◦ Examples: family, friends, colleagues, teachers, schools attended, where lived, jobs, interests, cultural identities (race/ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, religion) Add more bones to existing branches; add more branches of bones

Important to Remember Kinesiology must develop professionals who understand the impact of culture on their work (James-Hassan, 2016) ◦ Development of culturally fluent leaders should be a cornerstone of a Kinesiology education ◦ Leadership and cultural fluency must be taught to undergraduate and graduate students to move the profession forward Need to be aware of our own cultural self
