Coaching Training and Ensuring Competence
Coaching Competencies • Coaching is one of the primary vehicles by which we delivery our training/support • To be effective, it is crucial that our coaches: – Possess the appropriate knowledge and skills – Provide consistent support within a structured process
Coach/Consultant Skills • Two primary domains – Coaching/Consultation – Tiered Systems
Coaching/Consultation Skills • • • Coaching Adult Learning Theory Systems Level Consultation Individual Consultation Communities of Practice (Co. P)
Knowledge of Tiered Systems • Response to Intervention (Rt. I) • Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) • Instructional Methodologies • SWIS data systems • Rt. I data systems
Training • To ensure that all coaches have a minimal competency in all areas, they are provided training prior to the initiation of coaching activities. • Training model – Assess – Train – Assess
Training Model • Assess – Pretest – prior to coaching and in each of the domains • Train – Areas of weakness (<80% on assessment) identified – Training plan developed • Presentations by experts and readings • Assess – Posttest – upon completion of training weaknesses are reassessed • Training is repeated as necessary
Structuring the Coaching Process • Coaches then implement a predefined and structured approach to coaching outlined in the OTISS Coaching Guide which includes: – Assessment – Planning – Implementation – Progress Monitoring
Assessment • With site based team, the coach completes the Fidelity Assessment. – Evaluates the site’s degree of implementation of the Tiered model – Assesses various domains – Provides targets for improvement/intervention
Planning • Coaches work with site based personnel to complete the Site Action Plan – Designed to assist in determining: • What will be addressed • When • By whom *some steps will be assigned to the coaches, but most are assigned to site based personnel
Implementation • Coaches provide guidance, training and feedback regarding plan implementation • Coaches provide: – Training – Technical assistance/guidance – Access to materials – Feedback on achievement of goals
Progress Monitoring • Coaches track completion of the Site Action Plans and provide feedback to: – Site based teams – State level personnel
