Classify each polynomial and find its degree 1
- Slides: 6
Classify each polynomial and find its degree. 1) 8 x 3 2) x 2 + 3 x – 4 – Trinomial – Degree = 2 3) 2 x – 1 – Degree = 1 – Monomial – Degree = 3 – Binomial Combine like terms. 4) 5 x – 5 + 7 x – 6 5) 9 x 2 + 1 – 4 x 2 + 8 x = 12 x – 11 = 5 x 2 + 8 x + 1
16. 02 Ordering Polynomials
Remember that a polynomial has a number of terms. A polynomial can be written in ascending or descending order. A polynomial written in descending order begins with the term with the largest degree and each following term has a smaller degree. 3 x 2 – x + 2 x 3 + 4 x 2 + 6 x – 5 A polynomial written in ascending order begins with the term with the smallest degree and each following term has a larger degree. 8 + 7 x + 9 x 2 2 – 6 x 2
Write the following in descending order. 5 + 3 x 2 – 7 x = 3 x 2 – 7 x + 5 8 + 4 x + 9 x 2 = 9 x 2 + 4 x + 8 Write the following in ascending order. 2 x + 3 x 2 – 6 = – 6 + 2 x + 3 x 2 8 x + x 2 + 1 = 1 + 8 x + x 2
Sometimes, terms can be combined before writing the polynomial in order. Combine the like terms and write the resulting polynomial in descending order. 3 + 4 x – 7 + 2 x 2 + 6 x = 2 x 2 + 10 x – 4 2 x + 3 x 2 – 6 – 8 x 2 + 4 x – 1 = – 5 x 2 + 6 x – 7 8 x + x 2 + 1 – 2 x + 8 x 2 = 8 x 2 + 6 x + 1
Try This: Combine any like terms and write the resulting polynomial in descending order. 5 + 2 x – 3 + 4 x 2 + x = 4 x 2 + 3 x + 2 – 4 x + x 2 + 7 – 6 x 2 + 4 x – 1 = – 5 x 2 + 6 Classify and find the degree of each polynomial. 3 x + 6 – Binomial – Degree = 1 2 x 2 + x – 4 – Trinomial – Degree = 2
