Chapter 2 Taking Charge of Your Health
Lesson 1 • Building Health Skills
Learning Health Skills • Health Skills help you manage your health • Specific tools and strategies to maintain, protect, and improve all aspects of your health • Also called life skills • Can use them throughout your life
Communication Skills • Good communication = vital health skill • 3 Health Skills: interpersonal communication, refusal skills, and conflict resolution • These skills aide in giving and receiving information • Communication = not just talking but carefully choosing words and expressions to communicate how you feel
Communication Skills (Con’t) • Listen to others • Interpersonal communication = exchange of thoughts, feelings and beliefs between 2 or more people • Strengthen interpersonal communication by: -Use “I” messages to communicate your feelings -Communicate with respect and care -Be an active listener
Refusal Skills • Communication strategies that can help you say no when you are urged to take part in behaviors that are unsafe, unhealthful or that go against your values • Refusal strategies include: -Say no in a firm voice -Explain why -Offer alternatives -Stand your ground -Leave if necessary
Conflict-Resolution Skills • The process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving • They include: -stepping away from argument -allowing conflict to subside -using good interpersonal communication skills -maintain attitude of respect for you as well as other person’s involved • Individuals may compromise to resolve conflict
Accessing Information • Use reliable sources of health information • These include: -health care providers and professionals -valid internet sites -parents, guardians and other trusted adults -recently published material written by respected, well-known science and health professionals
Analyzing Influences • Understanding what influences you to make more healthful choices • The more you understand various influences in your life and how they effect you, the better able you are to make informed choices about your health
Analyzing Influences (Con’t) • Why do you do the things you do? -Personal Values -Personal Beliefs -Perceptions -Curiosity/Fears -Family and Culture -Media and Technology -Friends and Peers -School and Community
Self-Management Skills • Practicing health habits will protect your health • 2 Self-management skills: -Practicing Healthful Behaviors (figure 2. 4) -Managing Stress: (reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges and demands) develop stress management skills= skills that help you reduce and manage stress in your life • Ways to manage stress= exercise, relaxation and time management
Advocacy • Taking action to influence others to address a health-related concern or support a health-related belief. • Lets you share your health knowledge
Homework • Health Behaviors Checklist • Copy Figure 2. 4 • Which health habits do you practice every day? If you don’t practice some behaviors what are your reasons for it? Would you like to incorporate them into your daily routine? • List all the healthful strategies you used in the past week to relieve stress. Which ones were most helpful?
