All living things, plants and animals, need food, water and air to survive. Plants

All living things, plants and animals, need food, water and air to survive. Plants make their own food. They use water and sunlight to make the food they need to survive and grow. So, plants are called ‘producers’, because they produce (make) their own food for themselves. Animals cannot make their own food. They need to eat plants, or other animals, to survive. So, animals are called ‘consumers’. Plant Producers and animal Consumers – animals eating plants and animals eating other animals – this is called a FOOD CHAIN

Plants make their own food by mixing together inside their leaves water, air, and sunlight This makes the food the plant needs to survive and grow How plants make their own food is called: Photosynthesis

These small animals are consumers. Q: What animals are these and what do they eat? (buzz-talk, 10 seconds) Grasshoppers and Caterpillars eat plant leaves. Woodlice and Worms eat tiny bits of dead plant in soil. Animals that eat plants are called: Herbivores These animals are also Prey. This means that they are eaten by larger animals. Q: What larger animals could prey on (eat) these small animals? (buzz-talk, 10 seconds)

These animals are consumers. They prey on (eat) the small insects and animals that eat mainly plants. Q: Can you name these consumers? They are: Sparrow Mole Frog Hedgehog Rook Interesting Fact: A Rook is a large bird. It will often eat the eggs of smaller birds like the Sparrow Q: What types of animals do you think would eat these animals? (buzz-talk, 10 seconds)

These animals and other larger animals like them are Omnivores. This means they eat

These animals and other larger animals like them are Omnivores. This means they eat other animals as well as plants and their fruits and seeds. Animals that eat only meat are called: Carnivores When they hunt smaller animals the Badger and the Sparrow hawk are Predators – they prey on the smaller animals to eat. Q: What other Predators can you think of? Are there any predators you can think of that are also Carnivores? (buzz-talk, 10 seconds)

TASK Success Criteria: I can identify, name and order living things in a FOOD

TASK Success Criteria: I can identify, name and order living things in a FOOD CHAIN. • Match the pictures to the labels, this will help you learn more about the animals or plants. • Use the word cards to identify which picture shows a consumer and which a producer and place a word card under each picture card. • Place the Predator and Prey cards under your picture cards as well, to identify what animals are prey and what are predators. • Finally, use the Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore word cards. Can you place these under your animals to identify whether those animals eat only plants, only meat, or eat plants and meat and anything else they can find to eat?
