Types of Aesthetic Features (Aesthetic features are explicitly noted in Instrument specific marking guides for English. You either need to use them or analyse them in tasks. Aesthetic features are largely poetic devices 1. Visual devices: Simile Metaphor Personification 2. Symbolism and motifs Use of symbols to express ideas, emotions, attitudes, values Can be done in narratives through simile/ metaphor/ extended metaphor, analogy, lexical chains (a family of imagery) Can be costuming, set design, props, stagecraft in dramatised texts and camera angles and film techniques in film 3. Auditory features - Onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, rhythm, rhyme, cacophony, euphony. Repeated sounds can represent reality or construct moods. - Music, sound techniques in film and stagecraft
