Supreme Court ruling in 2003 overturned the last of anti-homosexual laws, discrimination still exists in many areas of the country. In many areas, gays and lesbians are unable to find housing and jobs, and they are physically attacked. 8 History of Homosexuality l l The term first appeared in 1869. Until the 1970’s, it was considered a sickness, at best, and a condemnable offense, at worst. Many people lost their jobs and were actively discriminated against. The Stonewall Riot in 1969 was a turning point for LGBT rights.
