Year 9 – Weekly Homework Mini GCSE Project – Manga Comic

Task: Continuing on from your ‘Alter Ego’ class project, you are going to research the ‘Manga’ and ‘Anime’ style of drawing. We would like you to present this research in the style of a Japanese Manga Comic. Please work your way through each of the weekly tasks shown on the next slide. You will need to hand in your whole project (including your reasearch word document) during your art lesson on the week commencing Monday 6 th November 2017. (Second week back after the half term holiday. ) Top Tip: Write your research in short bullet points on a word document, then it will be easy to transfer your notes into the comic book design.

Week 1: Research both Manga and Anime Art work. Explain what this style of drawing is and give a history of this form of Art… Use a word Document for this! Week 2: Research either a Manga or Anime artist. Using the above word document, write about their life story… Week 3: Using the same word document, research the style and technique of this art form. You will need to say how this style of drawing is created, what techniques or processes are used; what materials / media are required to create this and finally what range of colours are used. . ? Week 4: Using a pencil, sketch out a four page (A 4 Size) comic book style layout which is to contain all of your written research from tasks 1 to 3. Do this in a comic book style layout using speech bubbles or blocks. Alternatively, you could design a large A 1 or A 0 size poster rather than the four page comic book, or use an idea of your own. Week 5: Using a pencil, illustrate all of your written research with manga / anime style drawings. You could design a comic book front cover… Week 6: In manga / anime style, add colour to your comic book or porter design. Add any black fine liner / biro finishing details.

How this homework was graded: I’m a grade 6 -H Strengths: -Excellent written information given. Excellent composition of the use of space on the page / placement of drawings. -Excellent use of tone and colour shading has been used. -Student has use their own choice of presentation style. Words have been designed in theme / style of the art work.

How this homework was graded: I’m a grade 5 -L Strengths: -Excellent written information given. -Students own page layout designs have been used. -Student has included their own opinion about this style of drawing. Weaknesses: -The drawings look very 2 -D, and lack colour / tone. -A lot of white paper has been left blank. - No background drawings have been included behind the figures.

How this homework was graded: I’m a grade 4 -M Strengths: -Excellent pencil line drawings. -Some use of colour tone. -Good representation of the Japanese style of drawing faces. Weaknesses: -Very little written work shown. -The drawings look very flat. -A lot of white paper has been left blank. -Printed out comic book page layouts have been used rather than the students own work. - Only three pages out of the four needed were handed in.
