When Pigasso Met Mootisse An Art History Fued
Objectives 1. Students will learn about two masters of Modern Art, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. 2. Students will hear the fictional story about a feud, or argument, between the two artists. 3. Students will learn key vocabulary including feud, modern art, and artist's names. 4. Students will create artworks in the style of Matisse and Picasso using art processes of drawing and collage.
Vocabulary • Fued- an argument or disagreement • Modern Art- art produced from the late 1800's thru the mid 1900's • Pablo Picasso- a Spanish modern artist • Henri Matisse- a French modern artist • Collage- art made by attaching cut paper shapes or pictures cut from magazines with glue • Composition- arranging parts of an artwork
Modern Art Masters Picasso Matisse • Created many new styles of art but probably most famous for Cubism • In Cubism, a real object was created out of geometric shapes and simplified details • Objects were often distorted, meaning parts were moved around from their usual spots • Bright, pure color • Curvy lines and shapes • Style known as Fauvism, which means "wild beasts" • Artworks were meant to have an emotional impact

Let's Talk About the Book! • What were the artist's names? • Both artists were famous. What does that mean? • In the story, where did Pigasso and Mootisse move? • Why did the artists have an argument? • What did they build to divide them? • In the end, how did the artists feel about each other? • Have you ever had an argument with someone? How did you make it better?
Let's Make Art! • First, we will make a collage that looks similar to Picasso's artwork. • You will need these materials: Scissors Glue Old magazine Typing paper or construction paper as base • To start the collage, cut out several different facial features from a magazine. For example, find a nose from one face, and eye from another. Keep cutting out facial features until you have enough for en entire face. • Carefully trim out the face parts with your scissors. • Arrange the pieces on your background paper. They don't have to match up perfectly or even be in the right places!! • Glue the face pieces on your background paper. • Last, use crayons or markers to draw straight lines and create a face shape around the features. Again it doesn’t have to look real!! Use straight lines and geometric shapes.
Let's Make Art! • Let's make a collage similar to one that Matisse made. • You will need these materials: Scissors Glue Colorful paper Typing paper or construction paper as base • To start the collage, cut out several different curvy shapes from the colorful paper. • Arrange the pieces on your background paper until you have a composition (placement of pieces) you like. • Glue the cut out pieces on your background paper. • Sign your artwork and show it to someone in your home! • **This process is also explained in the earlier video.
Online options for this project: • Use the following apps or programs to create. • https: //sketchpad. app/ • Paint 3 D Picasso Collage- Use straight lines and geometric shapes (circles, squares, diamonds, triangles, etc. ) to build a face. Matisse Collage- Use freeform curvy lines to build organic shapes (looking like things that grow in nature).
Extend the Learning • Ask students to identify the geometric shapes used in the collage (squares, triangles, etc. ) • How do we know it's a _______? Students identify attributes such as number of sides and corners. • Older students can count and graph the number of each type of shape used. • Students can write/ give a speech about how each of their collages is like the Picasso or Matisse style. For example, "My artwork is like Matisse because I used curvy shapes and bright colors. "
