BRIEF ASSIGNMENT 1: PRE-SEMESTER GRAMMAR DIAGNOSTIC DUE: Monday, January 30 th Your assignments will generally be due every Monday night, with the exception of University holidays. In those cases, assignments will be due on Monday. If there any exceptions to this, I will let you know well ahead of time. ALWAYS check the syllabus at least a week in advance so that you know what is coming up. By 11: 59 pm This is one of the easier (less strenuous) assignments in this course because of its reflective nature. Take advantage of that and do the assignment. Don’t automatically lose 300 points from your total grade weights because you don’t turn BA 1 in. There are several steps you will need to complete in order to turn this assignment in, and some of them involve technology (technology sometimes goes wrong)! If you wait until Monday night, it may be too late to contact the correct channels for help. Start this assignment and the diagnostic early! Points are automatically deducted for late assignments, and you will only receive a portion of what you could have received on the assignment if you do not include your diagnostic results.

BRIEF ASSIGNMENT 1: STEPS Register in Raider Writer In Raider Writer, read the assignment

BRIEF ASSIGNMENT 1: STEPS Register in Raider Writer In Raider Writer, read the assignment description for BA 1 (also on the course blog) carefully. Take the pre-semester diagnostic linked on your Raider Writer homepage. Type a response in Word or another program that catches errors and paste the response into Raider Writer. Notes about diagnostic: You can only take it ONCE. Do NOT start the quiz and exit the screen. There is also a time-out feature on the diagnostic. If you walk away, it will time out and you will have issues getting your score. Budget time to do this is one sitting so you don’t have this problem! I suggest taking it in Firefox. Most problems with the diagnostic stem from the browser being used. I suggest NOT taking the diagnostic in Google Chrome; it is the most issueriddled. If following link, you MUST use your TTU e-mail address. Do not register with a personal email address. If you run into any problems, e-mail me immediately so that we can get the issue resolved.

STUDENT EXAMPLES B-quality example: I completed the ENGL 1301 course at Texas Tech University

STUDENT EXAMPLES B-quality example: I completed the ENGL 1301 course at Texas Tech University this fall; my final grade in the class was an 87% (B). My scores on the pre-diagnostic test was a 71%, and when I completed the class my grade on the post-diagnostic test was a 79%. My score on the pre-diagnostic test for 1302 was a 68%, my score was much lower than I hoped for but still higher than I expected because, with the chaotic environment surrounding me at the time when the test was taken, I failed to properly read the instructions of the final section. I feel as though if I had focused more thoroughly on the directions towards the end of the test I would have received a grade more around the 80% mark. English is my favorite subject; I enjoyed my ENGL 1301 class immensely and truly wish it had been held more frequently than just once a week. That being said, I am prepared to do everything in my power to achieve an A in ENGL 1302. I was three points away from doing so in 1301, and, even though I held the third highest grade in my lecture, it still wasn’t enough to receive those rare A’s. In order to accomplish this goal I have set out for myself I have decided that I would like to focus on small spelling errors, and MLA formatting. Many times I lost valuable points because my papers were not correctly formatted in MLA style; the loss of those crucial marks killed me and I want to make sure I do not lose out again this semester for such small things. With that in mind I believe the two key issues I need to focus on are spelling, and grammar, because ninety nine percent of the time those two little details are the reason my scores are not what I wish they were.

D-quality example: I technically never took English 1301. My senior year of high school

D-quality example: I technically never took English 1301. My senior year of high school I was in AP Literature. After taking the AP test they gave me college credit for English 1301. Therefore, this is my first college English class and I don’t have any pre-diagnostic test scores for 1301. However, my pre-diagnostic test for this class was 75%. Sadly, I think I did better than I expected. I guess because it has been a while since I’ve taken an English class I thought my grammar skills would be really rusty. I really want to get better at knowing when to use “who/whom” correctly. I’ve always had trouble with that. I understand it when the teacher explains it but then quickly forget the rules. Also, I need to learn how to organize paragraphs. I’m not very good at it either. Overall, I’m pretty confident in my spelling skills but there are some areas I’m weak at. And I definitely want to improve my organization of essays and paragraphs in the essays.

Failing Example (F): I have never taken the English course 1301. I took the

Failing Example (F): I have never taken the English course 1301. I took the English AP test my junior year of high school and received a three, testing out of 1301. My score on the pre-diagnostic for 1302 is a seventy-five, which is lower than I expected it to be. It appears that I need to focus on recognizing run-on sentences, as well as learning how to use apostrophes appropriately. I also believe that I need to focus on mastering the MLA format this semester.
