Overview of Tama Waterworks TAMA area As of Mar. 2016 Central Tokyo Item TOKYO TAMA Central Customers (1, 000 people) 13, 173 3, 900 9, 273 Supply area (km 2) 1, 239 612 627 Total length of distribution pipes (km) 26, 915 10, 369 16, 546 Average amount of water supply( 1, 000 m 3/day) 4, 181 1, 142 3, 039 Purification plants 81 70 11 PP’s Capacity( 1, 000 m 3/day) --- 0. 04 – 32 15 – 1, 700
Tama Waterworks Reformation Strategy Formulated in 2013 Background 1.Pipeline network was developed insufficiently. 2.Aging facilities. Constructed in the 1950 s and 60 s. 3.Water supply easily cuts off when disasters strike. Steps Ø Developing water transmission network Ø Rezoning water distribution areas Ø Improving disaster preparedness plan
Development of Water Transmission Network Ozaku PP Higashimurayama PP Higashiyamato SS Tama north-south transmission main Diameter 2000 mm Length 16 km now under construction Haijima SS Tama hills transmission main Narahara SS Diameter 1500 mm Length 32 km : Purification Plant : Water Supply Station : Pumping Station : Transmission Pipe (existing) Hijirigaoka SS Finished in 2015 Yarimizuoyama SS Goal Ø Improve reliability of water supply even in emergencies Ø Replace aging pipes without disruption of water supply
Rezoning of Water Distribution Areas C town Each city supplied water in its district only. P D city A city P Water Supply Station Distribution Pump Gravity Flow Rezoning makes water supply more efficient. B city Integration of facilities C town P D city P Interchange of water supply Pressured flow Utilization of gravity flow Goal A city B city Ø Provide tap water anytime by interchange of water supply Ø Improve facility management by integration of facilities Ø Save energy by taking advantage of gravity flow
Improvement of Disaster Preparedness Planned disruption of power supply in 2011 made it difficult/impossible to - Provide tap water by distribution pumps - Collect data for water supply from telemeters Water stoppage more than 260, 000 households Batteries Telemeter for water quality Goal Ø Emergency generators are being installed at the facilities. Ø Storage batteries are being mounted on the telemeters. Ø Facilities are being renovated to make them earthquake resistant.
Summary To overcome unique challenges in Tama ØDeveloping water transmission network ØRezoning water distribution areas ØImproving disaster preparedness plan We will supply tap water in a stable and sustainable manner with the advantage of regional waterworks along with a disaster management plan now and in the future!!
