Charles Martel How did he gain power? ● “Mayor of the Palace” → most important noble When did he rule? ● 718 -741 A. D.

Charles Martel Accomplishments? ● Won support of the Pope (from the Catholic Church) ● Defended Europe from the Muslim forces trying to spread Islam ○ Battle of Tours - led Franks against the Muslims ○ Stopped Muslim spread in Europe ○ Christianity remained major religion in Europe ● Nicknamed “The Hammer”

Pepin How did he gain power? ● Son of Charles Martel ● Became “Mayor of the Palace” upon his death ● With the help of the Pope and most Frankish nobles, Pepin became new king of the Franks ● Anointed as King by the Pope When did he rule? ● 751 A. D.

Pepin Accomplishments? ● People saw his anointing by the Pope as a sign that Pepin had the support of God (God’s chosen ruler) ● As the Lombards (Germanic Tribe) attacked Rome, Pepin fought them and won. ○ Gave the land he won to the pope who made these lands known as Papal States. He ran them like he was king.
