What is a wage? This is a payment by the hour Many people who work in factories, in building and construction industry are paid by the hour. Often there is a basic wage for a certain number of hours, called a basic week.
Example #1 A basic work week is made up of 40 hours at a rate of $12 per hour. What are the wages paid for that week? Solution Basic wage = basic hours × hourly rate Basic wage = 40 × 12 = $ 480
Example #2 An agricultural field worker is paid $400 for a basic 40 hour week. What is the hourly rate paid? Solution Basic wage = basic hours × hourly rate 400 = 40 × r 400/40 = r
Overtime Any number of hours worked beyond the basic week is paid at a different rate than the basic rate. These extra hours are referred to over-time. Over time rate are calculated as Time and a quarter = 1 ¼ times the basic rate Time and a half = 1 ½ times the basic rate Double time = 2 times the basic rate Triple time = 3 times the basic rate
Example A road cleaner works a 40 hour week for a basic wage of $270. He also works 4 hours overtime at time and a half and 3 hours overtime at double time. Calculate this total wages for the week. Basic wage = basic hours × hourly rate 270 = 40 × r r = 270/40 r = $6. 75
