Vijayaraghavan Cornell – in-India & Sathguru, India Igniting development through Academic technology transfer:
The Potential and Failure of Tech Transfer and Commercialization mission Technologies created in developed and developing countries can trigger sustainable inclusive economic growth by eliminating poverty in developing and less developed regions HOWEVER………. the technologies are not delivered to the appropriate organizations, entrepreneurs, businesses and agencies who can validate and adapt them to local economic structures and markets What are the reasons for this failure?
There are few international structures and processes that: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Select appropriate, adaptable technologies from technology providers Prepare the necessary scientific, technical, legal, and human components into an assessable, accessible and assimilateble package Translate the technology for regional and national relevance through technology validation process Identify and mentor suitable and receptive implementing entities Hand hold the technology transfer and commercialization process between creators and implementers Provide on-going mentoring and support to assure the technology transfer and assimilation takes “root” Provide appropriate funding all through this transfer, translation and commercialization process.
The approach adopted by Cornell – Sathguru alliance Over the 15 years, The Cornell University – Sathguru Partnership focused on India, South East Asia and East Africa This Partnership has delivered appropriate – contemporary technologies to private and public sector organizations for commercialization and dissemination, while preparing institutions to create sustainable internal capacity for technology access, absorption, validation and dissemination.

The scale up element in technology transfer • Technologies successfully absorbed in India, now taken to Africa and to relevant regions in Asia • The translational validation of the technologies in respective countries accomplished with academic and industry partners in those countries • Maximizing impact is high if public and private institutions collaborate in the translational phase
