The Sixth Sense Textual Analysis

Cinematography • The main focus of the trailer is on Cole or the doctor

Cinematography • The main focus of the trailer is on Cole or the doctor Malcolm Crowe. For example, there are many shot reverse shots of the characters and also two shots in which they are talking. This shows that they are the protagonists. When we see one of the ghosts there is a reaction shot of Cole looking scared and a quick pan to a girl hidden under a bed. This reinforces the shock and tells the audience that something is going to happen. • We receive a variety of shot needed to show he is feeling so the audience are presented with extreme closes ups. One of the most powerful is when he is in a hospital bed crying and we receive a close up along with him saying “ I see dead people. ” Although Malcolm does not see the ghosts the trailer focuses on his emotions by showing close ups and mid shots. This could suggest that he has some sort of sub plot related to Cole’s ‘gift’.

Sound We then have a snippet of an important conversation between Cole And Malcolm in which they discuss Cole’s problem he has to try and overcome: ‘I see dead people, walking around like regular people…’ and this helps create fear in the audience and makes them wonder whether the protagonist is telling the truth or if Malcolm will believe him. ‘When they get mad, it gets cold…’…’How often do you see them? ’…’All the time. ’ And lastly, at the end of the trailer the music dies down and we hear an effective piece of conversation between Malcolm/Cole: ‘please make them leave’ ‘I’m working on it’ which tells the audience that the boy is desperate to get rid of his ability but we are left unsure of whether Malcolm will be able to help him or not This conversation hints to the fact that the film is going to focus on Malcolm is going to try and help Cole with his problems but we do not know whether he will be able to actually help him or not. At first we are introduced to a scene in which a person has had an accident and died. Cole says to his mother that a woman is dead and his mother then asks if he can see her. He replies saying that she is simply “ Standing next to my window. ” This diegetic sound is accompanied by tension building music to emphasize the mother’s reaction to hearing this and puts tension into the audience The sound throughout the film soon changes as we hear Cole’s ‘speech’ in which he reveals the main theme of the film, with a combination of heart beats and booms, this has connotations of fear and tension. This also hints to the thriller/ horror genre of the film. The visual that happens with this is a montage of shots that appear and fade out in sync with the sound.

Editing A lot of the scenes in this trailer are fast paced. This tells the audience that something may be wrong or in fact a twist may occur thus making them wonder what is going to happen. Flashes and fades are used to introduce new settings or to link the montage of clips together. Flashes can be used to shock the audience and again make them wonder what is going to change or happen. This trailer doesn’t have a voiceover however, it uses Coles and the Doctors voice to narrate the story. This allows you to watch the plot and also receive characters personal point of view.

Mise en scene • Throughout the trailer the colour red is used frequently- for example the red balloon seen floating to the ceiling and various character’s jumpers. This connotes bloodshed/death and danger which leads the audience to expect death and/or violence within the film. The focus more or less is on the characters and the ghosts themselves. Cole is normally on his own when he witnesses them in the trailer. This can reinforce his vulnerability which would typically be assumed relative to his age. The dark clothes that Malcolm Crowe is regularly seen wearing throughout the trailer can convey the fact that the character is upset or troubled and this then goes on to them wanting to know why this is (which is, in essence, making them want to watch the film itself). The box that the girl hands him is used to make the audience want to watch the film. Wondering what is in it at what significance it has. Then we see a shot of him carrying it through a busy room which shows a change of pace due to the fact that instead of running away from the ghosts he is communicating with them.
