Intro Activity § Define “altruism” and “selfishness” § Using Excel, you will track your behavior for a week, paying close attention to how you act with others. § How many times did you do something altruistic/charitable? § How many times did you do something that was selfish? § At the end of the week, you will be asked to explain why you did these things in an essay

Warm up: Go, Go, Said the Bird § What is the narrator’s conflict? § Why does she want to get back home? § Explain the ending: § What happened? § WHY does it happen? § Is the main character’s behavior during the story selfish? Why or why not? § What is the main character’s opinion of her place in the world? How does this affect her way of thinking?

The Road § During the reading you will: § Respond to the text with journal entries § “what would YOU do? ”, “why do you think they did this…” and so on § Compare your selfish/altruistic actions to the actions of the characters § Compare the text to the film

First Prompt § What would you do if the world we all knew came to an end? There are no laws, no hospitals, and no stable source of food. Would you try to continue following the rules of society, or would you do whatever it took to survive? Why?
