The Ohio State University Extension Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 1 End of Year Club Packets There are still some club end of year packets at the Extension Office. These packets contain member and volunteer certificates, pins, and information about end of year secretary and treasurer forms. Any tenured volunteers who have not picked up their gift, these are also available at the Extension Office. Secretary and Treasurer Books and Honor Club Forms for secretary and treasurer books are in your club year end packet. This gives members a guideline of what should be included in their books. Honor Club forms were in the fair packets this year. If you need an additional copy, just give the office a call. Books and Honor Club forms are due to the Extension Office by January 13, 2020. Club Financial Forms Annual Financial forms are due by January 31, 2020. Forms can be found in your year end packet or you can contact the office for a copy. This is a requirement for every club. Enrollments will not be accepted until your Annual Financial form is turned in to the office. 990 N E-Postcard Filing Again this year, the Extension Office will be filing all club EIN’s. Please do not attempt to file your club’s. United Way Annual Campaign Did you know that Seneca County 4 -H is an associate Agency to the Tiffin-Seneca United Way? The monies raised through this campaign help make a difference in our community and support their associate agencies like Seneca County 4 -H! Thank you for your consideration in helping to ensure that our service continues! 2020 Fingerprints/Background Checks If you received a letter in the mail, that you needed to get you fingerprints done, you have until January 31, 2020 to do so or you will not be considered a volunteer for the 2020 4 -H year. Reimbursement forms should be turned in to the Extension office along with the original receipt for repayment. Jan-March 2020 Important Information About New Volunteers As a reminder, clubs need to have two more verified volunteers in the club. Verified volunteers have: • Completed a volunteer application • Completed a volunteer interview • Completed a background/fingerprint check • Completed a new volunteer orientation/Policy 1. 50 • Complete a volunteer enrollment form Filling out an enrollment form as a new volunteer, does NOT qualify you to be a volunteer. If you do NOT have two verified volunteers in your club, you will NOT be able to enroll your club for the 2020 4 -H year. New Volunteer applications must be turned in to the Extension Office by January 31, 2020 to be considered for the 2020 4 -H season. Volunteer Update and Policy 1. 50 Training Volunteers, please mark your calendars to attend one of the mandatory Policy 1. 50 training and 4 -H update. Any active volunteers must attend a training to be a volunteer for the 2020 year. All trainings will be held at Sentinel Career and Technology Center in Tiffin. You will be able to select three, twenty-minute sessions to attend after the 4 -H update and Policy 1. 50 training. The topics include: Junior Fair Update and Livestock Project Expectations and Requirements, What You Need to Know About Bullying, Club Audits/Financials and Club Visits and What to Expect, Teen Opportunities and Scholarships, Creative Ways to Engage Members at Meetings, and Miscellaneous Project Judging and Requirements and Family Handbook. Training dates are as follows: • Thursday, January 9 th from 6 -8 p. m. • Tuesday, January 21 st from 12 -2 p. m. • Tuesday, January 21 st from 6 -8 p. m. • Saturday, January 25 th from 9 -11 a. m. Start Up Packets The 2020 Club start up packets will be available during the volunteer trainings. If you are missing any forms or need additional forms, please let the Extension Office know.

Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 1 2020 Enrollment for the 2020 year will be taken March 1 -20, 2020. If you would like to send your book order in early, so it is ready you can drop it off at the office, mail it in, or email mancuso. 48@osu. edu. You can bring the book order in with your enrollment forms and it can be filled while you are here if you prefer. Enrollment fees will remain the same: 4 -H Members $10. 00 and Cloverbuds $5. 00. 4 -H project members should be aware that your $10 enrollment covers FIVE projects. If you wish to take additional projects over the five, you will be charged $5. 00/book. This does not include projects like dogs, goats, poultry, etc. that can be used for multiple projects/animals. Club payments for enrollment will be put in the 4 -H Council box again this year. Checks should be made payable to “Seneca County 4 -H Advisory Council. ” If you are paying with cash, please bring the exact amount, we can not make change. Additional project books, beyond the five included in enrollment fees, should also be made payable to “Seneca County 4 -H Advisory Council” If your club/members need to purchase a resource book at the time of enrollment, please bring an additional check or cash. Resource books are purchased through the Extension Office. Checks for Resource Books should be made payable to “OSU Extension” 4 -H Achievement Form Older youth in 4 -H should experience and take advantage of the many opportunities for trips and scholarships that are available to them through the county, state, and national level. In order to qualify or be considered for some of these opportunities, an Achievement Form must be filled out. Some of the opportunities include: National 4 -H Congress, National Dairy Conference, State Junior Fair Board, and many more! Achievement forms can be found at: http: //www. ohio 4 h. org/awardsandscholarships Achievement Forms are due to the Extension Office by Friday, January 31, 2020. Jan-March 2020 Quality Assurance Every member taking livestock (not horses or dogs) must attend quality assurance training. First year members taking a livestock project must attend a county wide quality assurance session and a parent/guardian MUST be present. There are four options for completing quality assurance training. • Attend one of the county wide trainings offered in Seneca County. All first-year members taking a livestock project must attend one of these sessions and a parent/guardian must be present. The test out option will be offered again this year only at the county wide trainings. Youth ages 1518 years old who pass the quality assurance test can test out of their annual quality assurance program permanently. These ages are as of January 1, 2020 - a youth’s 4 -H age. A quality assurance study guide can be found on the Livestock Resource page at: http: //ohio 4 h. org/statewideprograms/animalsciences/livestock-resources Dates for County Wide Trainings: • Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 6: 00 p. m. , test out starting at 5: 00 p. m. at Seneca East Schools • Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 6: 00 p. m. , test out starting at 5: 00 p. m. at Mohawk Schools • Sunday, April 26, 2020 at 4: 00 p. m. , test out starting at 3: 00 p. m. at Sentinel. • Attend a qualified assurance training with/in your club. Certified assistant instructors will be able to teach quality assurance at the club level. If they choose to open it up for others to attend, a list will be compiled and made available to members. • Attend a qualified quality assurance training in another Ohio county- fees may apply. You can call the Extension Office for dates and times. • Attend a qualified quality assurance training at an Ohio 4 H approved event. These could be at a clinic, Junior Swine Day, Ohio Beef Expo, Dairy Palooza, Champions Choice Lamp Camp, etc. Quality Assurance must be completed by a county deadline of May 1, 2020. No exceptions. Make sure you sign in or out at all events or obtain a completion certificate and turn it in to the Extension Office.

Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 1 Jan-March 2020 Camp Information Mark your calendars for the 2020 Junior Camp at Kelleys Island, which will be held on June 9 -12, 2020! Camp registration forms, medical forms, cost, and any other important information will be coming in the following months. Be sure to check out our website and Facebook page for additional information. Ohio 4 -H Week Ohio 4 -H week is March 8 -14, 2020! Have you or your club celebrated 4 -H week? This is a great time to represent Seneca County 4 -H and spread awareness about this great organization. You could wear your club or county 4 -H apparel, paint windows, set up a booth, create posters and flyers, or work with Tractor Supply Company to set up a table in the store. These are just some ideas in which you can spread the word about 4 -H. If you or your club celebrates Ohio 4 -H, send us pictures of what you did and we can share on our social media! Ohio 4 -H Conference End Ohio 4 -H week by attending the Ohio 4 -H Conference at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Saturday, March 14, 2020. This conference has something for everybody to enjoy and leave with, whether you are a 4 -H members, parent, or volunteer. The registration fee is $40, registrations and fees are due to the Extension Office by Friday, February 14, 2020. Registrations are now available at the Extension Office or on the website: https: //ohio 4 h. org/events/ohio-4 -hconference Register now to ensure your spot in the sessions and workshops you want to attend as they fill up fast! Club Officer Training There will be an officer training for anyone who is an elected officer, recreation leader, health and safety speaker, etc. The training will be held on Monday, March 9, 2020 from 6 -8 p. m. at Sentinel. Camp counselor interviews were held on December 26 and 27, 2019 and planning sessions will begin in January. Congratulations to our 2020 Camp Counselors! Stay tuned for details about the location and cost! 2020 Seneca County Family Handbook The 2020 Family handbook is available on our website under the 4 -H Youth Development tab for all members, families, volunteers, and advisors to access at their convenience. Volunteers and advisors will each be given a copy at volunteer training. If you pre-ordered a hard copy, they are available at the office. Please feel free to print a copy off our website. If you do not have access to a computer or the internet, please contact us. There are some hard copies still available at the office. The handbooks cost $5. 00 and will be available while supplies last.

Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 1 4 -H Club Audits Starting this year, 2020, we will be randomly selecting around five clubs to be audited by the Seneca County 4 -H Advisory Council. This is a way to ensure all clubs are following the correct financial guidelines as suggested by the Extension Office. It will also protect the treasurer, club, advisors, and Extension Office in the case of any financial issues or challenges by others. Audits that do not pass inspection will require further investigation. Clubs who were selected for 2020 should have received a letter in the mail along with information about the audit process. 4 -H Club Meeting Visits Continuing in 2020, Advisory Council members will be visiting clubs to help support and advise on club structure and observe how club meetings are run. Eleven clubs will be randomly selected for visiting each year. This is approximately ¼ of the clubs per year. It is our hope and intention that the clubs of Seneca County are running with a similar structure and in a consistent manner. Information on best practices will be sent out shortly. Once you have set your schedule of meetings times and dates for your club for the 2020 4 -H year, please be sure to provide a copy to the Extension Office. CARTEENS If you are interested in being a teen instructor for CARTEENS, you do not need to be in 4 -H, but you must be at least 14 years old. As soon as you turn 14, you can join CARTEENS; it does not have to be by January 1 st. We meet every third Monday of the month, except July, at 6: 30 p. m. at the Extension Office and would love to have you join our team. Teen facilitators teach other teen traffic offenders about speeding, operating a vehicle impaired, and distracted driving. Being a facilitator is a great way to improve public speaking skills and learn more about teaching tools and not to mention there are gas cards, scholarships, and fun trips to Washington D. C. that you can earn. Jan-March 2020 Junior Leadership News and Information Junior Leadership is for any 4 -H Teen, 14 years and older. As soon as you turn 14 you can join Junior Leadership; it does no have to be by January 1 st. We welcome any and all new members every month and we would love to have you join us! Junior Leadership focuses a lot on community service. The Junior Leadership group goes on teen exchanges with other counties throughout Ohio, helps with project judging and 4 -H awareness, hosts Santa’s Workshop and a Career Day in the fall, participates at the 4 -H Kick-Off at the fairgrounds, helps with the milkshake stand puts on a square dance during the fair, and provides other fun opportunities for teens. Junior Leadership meets every second Monday of the month at 6: 30 p. m. at the Extension Office. Come and check us out! Junior Leadership will be hosting a fun night on Saturday, January 25 from 7 -10 p. m. at the Extension Office. This will be a game night that has casino type games. Snacks and drinks will also be provided. Seneca County Market Lamb Giveaway Crystal Spring Club Lambs wants to promote both 4 -H and FFA interest in the sheep and lamb industry by getting more youth interested. This year, Crystal Springs Club Lambs will be giving away one market lamb to be shown at the Seneca County Fair as a market lamb project. To enter, you must be between the ages of 10 to 18 , enrolled in 4 -H or FFA, and live in Seneca County. If you meet those requirements and can care for the lamb, send a post card to: Crystal Springs Club Lambs North 2801 County Highway 9 Sycamore, Oh 44882 Please have your name and phone number on the card. There is only one entry per youth and the drawing will be held April 1, 2020.

Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 1 Upcoming Opportunities Citizenship Washington Focus and Leadership Washington Focus Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a 4 -H leadership program for high school youth, ages 14 -19, from across the country. Citizenship Washington Focus gives 4 -H youth the opportunity to explore, develop, and refine the civic engagement skills they need to be outstanding leaders in their home communities and at the national level. Through sightseeing tours in the living classroom of Washington, D. C. and hands-on educational workshops, youth will learn about the history of our nation, the leaders who have shaped it, and how they can apply the leadership and citizenship skills they have learned at CWF when they return home. CWF will be June 14 -20, 2020 for Seneca County delegates and the cost is $1, 375. The program will take place at the National 4 -H Youth Conference Center, just one mile from the Washington, D. C. border. Middle school 4 -H delegates will: • Build confidence in their ability to motivate and direct others in meaningful action • Practice effective communication with others through group discussion and public speaking • Work with others to create and accomplish goals • Develop an understanding of their own personal leadership style • Exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other 4 -H'ers from across the nation. • Experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of Washington, D. C. LWF will be July 27 -31, 2020 and the cost is $850. The Ohio Military Kids (OMK) program has experienced both. Our gratitude extends to those who contribute time and talents to support the growing number of military-affiliated youth served by OMK has a full schedule planned for the 2020 event season. Ohio Military Kids is a partnership with Ohio State University Extension 4 -H Youth Development and Family Readiness with Ohio National Guard. With this amazing partnership, Ohio Military Kids puts on several events throughout the state of Ohio. These events range from daylong educational programs, to overnights, to weekend camps, and even weeklong residential camps. These events are open to youth of military families, and they do not have to be a member of 4 -H to participate. 4 -H members and adults have the opportunity to volunteer for OMK events, including as camp counselors in the summer! The mission of Ohio Military Kids is to support the youth of military families throughout the deployment cycle. Ohio 4 -H is an essential supporter of the Ohio Military Kids Program and its mission. Ohio 4 -H works hand-in-hand with Ohio National Guard to deliver fun and supportive programs to military families. With military youth in every county in Ohio, the partnership of 4 -H to promote OMK opportunities to your military friends and neighbors in all 88 counties is appreciated! Seneca County Family Newsletter Jan-March 2020 Volume 30, Issue 1 Buckeye Leadership Workshop is a learning, sharing “workshop” intended as a balanced program of social, physical, mental, and spiritual activities. Buckeye Leadership Workshop provides a powerful learning environment in which anyone who works with people, professionally or informally, can develop programming for youth or adults. The workshop also benefits those who simply enjoy associating with great people, experiencing new ideas, and learning new skills. Experiential learning through recreation is truly the intent and methodology of Buckeye Leadership Workshop is March 25 -29, 2020 at Recreation Unlimited in Ashley, Ohio. The cost to attend is $350 until March 1 st and $375 after March 1 st. The focus of the five-day leadership experience is the development of concrete peer leadership skills that will enable participants to have an immediate impact in their home 4 -H club, county, community, or school. The camp is active and engaged—there’s very little sitting and listening, and much opportunity for group interaction. Participants leave the camp ready to take on new challenges. The camp is open to young men and young women age 15 to 18 years old. Leadership Camp is June 1 -5, 2020 at 4 -H Camp Ohio in St. Louisville, Ohio. You must let the Extension Office know if you are interested in attending by March 13 th. Our friends from OSU’s Orton Geological Museum will be there with fossils and gemstones, you create a volcano and dig into paleontology. Sat. 2020 Presidential Inauguration 4 -H'ers currently in 8 th-11 th grade with the understanding that all youth will be in high school and not have graduated by January 2021 are eligible to witness a Presidential Inauguration. Seneca County Family Newsletter Jan-March 2020 Volume 30, Issue 1 Youth Poultry Clinic The 2020 Youth Poultry Clinic will be held Saturday, April 18, at OSU ATI, Wooster. The postmark deadline for registration is Wednesday, April 1. The cost for the clinic is $25. 00 for adults and $20. 00 for youth. Registration material will be available at https: //ohio 4 h. org/animalsciences/poultry-calendar -events. Tentative topics are: Necropsy, Processing/Meats, Exhibition Poultry, Digestion/Nutrition, OPA/Careers, Youth Quality Assurance, Broilers A-Z, Laying Hens/Eggs, and a Question/Answer Corner. Refreshments and lunch are included in the registration fee. Vendors will be present. Toledo Walleye 4 -H Night with the Toledo Walleye will be on Sunday, February 16 th- President’s day weekend. The Walleye take on the Idaho Steelheads at 5: 15 p. m. There will be a pregame panel with business professionals in the Ag industry at 3: 30 p. m. Junior Fair News from Emily Today is January 3, 2020, we have exactly 204 days until we move into the Seneca County Fair! Don’t blink…. you will be at pre-fair judging and unloading your livestock out of the trailer. So many exciting things happened in 2019. So many possibilities for 2020. I enjoyed my first year as Junior Fair Board Coordinator and am looking forward to an exciting second year. On January 2 our Fair Queen, Maddy Norman competed in the Queen’s Contest at the Ohio Fair Managers Convention. On January 4, we will have over 15 Junior Fair Board members attending the convention. We already have some exciting activities planned for the upcoming year! January: Donor Campaign, we have some awesome new opportunities to support Seneca County youth and our fair this year. January 5: We officially welcome 20 new members to the Seneca County Junior Fair Board and have our 2020 organizational meeting at 4 p. m. in the Youth Center at the fairgrounds. April 19: We will be hosting a “run walk” event that will benefit the Junior Fair Board and Parkinson Disease research. May 9: We will be hosting and facilitating Fair 101. A morning of informative learning for new 4 -H members and advisors. More information to come! Junior Fair Board meets the first Sunday of every month in the Youth Center.
