When and where � The Indus Valley was home to one of the world’s civilisations. It began nearly 5, 000 years ago in an area of modern –day Pakistan and Northern India. There were more than 1, 400 towns and cities in the Indus Valley. The biggest were Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Around 80, 000 people lived in these cities. The names Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were given to the cities in later times. We do not know what the Indus people called their cities, because nobody has been able to translate the ancient language.

Growing up � We don’t know how many children went to school. A scribe would teach some children to read and write and a priest would teach religious lessons. Even if they didn’t go to school most children worked hard. Even small children helped their family’s with daily tasks. Children were taught how to make things, how to farm and how to hunt.

Indus River They collected water from the river. It was their main river. They had to build a wall to block the water out otherwise their houses, farms and themselves would wash away. It is a bad neighbour. It helps farming transportation and immigration.

Water systems � They were the first people to have flushing toilets and a sewage systems. The Indus people had to collect water from the river otherwise they would have to walk miles to the next closest river. You wouldn’t have the same toilet as you have now.
