The Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus’ Arrest Lesson objectives: • To know and understand the story of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus’ arrest • To reflect upon the emotions Jesus felt leading up to his death
What happened? Working with the person next two you, arrange the cards into the correct order, using the Bible passage to help you Extension: answer the following questions in your book: 1) From the account, what emotions do you think Jesus was feeling and why? 2) Why do you think Christians take comfort in knowing that Jesus struggled to do what God wanted?
Jesus’ agony Jesus knew that he had to die in order to save people. Only Jesus, as God’s perfect Son, could do this However, it was still a terrifying experience, as Jesus would be taking the punishment for the sins of all mankind.
How did Jesus feel? The Power of Music We are going to listen to an example of a Christian chant which was written to capture how Jesus felt in the garden. Listen carefully to the music. As it plays (give yourself a couple of minutes before writing), write a paragraph explaining what emotions you feel as you listen and why.
How did Jesus feel? Using the information that you have, write a poem capturing how Jesus may have felt. In your poem, think about the following: The fact he was going to be betrayed by Judas The fact that his disciples were all going to leave him – he was all alone The fact that only Jesus could take this punishment to save mankind – no one else The fact that Jesus knew what was going to happen to him (his crucifixion)

Prep – due Friday 1) Draw a cross in the centre of your page. Read over Matthew 26: 57 -27: 66 and around the cross explain in your own words all the things that happened to Jesus. 2) Stick in the picture of Jesus and the crucifixion. Next to it, write down what you think the artist was trying to show in the picture (think about the colours, mood etc)
