The Acts of the Apostles “Acts 19: 1 -41`Ministry at Ephesus: Part 2” • Who is this Alexander? – He was Jewish and may have been an instigator on their behalf? – Doubtfully the same as in 1 Tim 1: 20, II Tim 4: 14 – His presence failed to calm the crowd but energized it the more. – vs. 35 -41 – the city clerk (Roman) steps forward. • A keeper of the public archives, magistrate of great authority and true politician. • He first quieted the crowd. • He reviews the deity of the goddess Diana. • He pleads for quiet and reason. • These men are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess. – A lesson even today to missionaries. – The courts are available, proconsuls (deputies, judges) are present, and charges against them can be made if warranted. – “For we are in danger of being called in question for today’s uproar, there being no reason which we may give to account for this disorderly gathering. ” 5 October 5, 2014 Bob Eckel
