Mentoring during a Pandemic What counts as student teaching? • PDE has allowed for student teaching to be 100% online for 2020 -2021. How do I meet my student teacher? • There will be no group meetings. Contact your mentees by phone or email and arrange an initial meeting (perhaps via Zoom). How do I observe my student teacher? • Arrange with the cooperating teacher and your mentee to gain access to the school’s online platform. If there is a problem with you gaining access, contact Jim Osborne (josborne@sju. edu).

Mentor Responsibilities ● Build rapport with your student teacher and the cooperating teacher. ● Advocate for your student teacher. ● Report discrimination/harassment: Under no circumstance should a student teacher have to tolerate harassment or intimidation of any kind based on race, gender, color, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. Student teachers are not expected to work in a hostile environment. If a student teacher alerts you that they are in a hostile environment, take the following steps: 1. If appropriate, first speak to co-operating teacher, and notify the seminar professor immediately. 2. Jim Osborne will be notified by the seminar professor who will investigate the situation to see if an immediate change of placement is required.

A Word About Performance Levels Our Classroom Observation Form uses the same criteria for the domains of Planning, Classroom Environment, and Instruction that are used by practicing teachers in the PA Department of Education Educator Effectiveness system. • Distinguished is identified as a goal to strive for, but it is NOT available for rating since distinguished is not a level that student teachers can potentially demonstrate. • Proficient indicates that the student teacher’s performance is substantially demonstrated at this point in the clinical experience at the professional level. • Basic indicates that the student teacher is performing at the basic level and is demonstrating partial proficient professional practices. • Unsatisfactory indicates that the student teacher does not meet performance expectations required for professional teaching.

PDE 430 • Two satisfactory PDE 430 assessments are required for certification. It may become necessary to do an additional PDE 430 assessment to meet the requirements for certification. • University Mentors are required to contact the Director of Clinical Experience in advance of issuing an Unsatisfactory PDE 430 assessment. • Note: An unsatisfactory rating must withstand the test of a legal challenge.
