HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Makerere University was established in 1922 as a humble technical school. It

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Makerere University was established in 1922 as a humble technical school. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious English Universities in Africa. In January of that same year, the school which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying carpentry, Building and Mechanics. The college soon began offering various other courses in Medical care, Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. In 1935, the college expanded becoming a centre for higher education in East Africa. In 1935, the college started developing into an institution of Higher education, offering post-school certificate courses. In 1949, it became a university College affiliated to the University College of London, offering courses leading to the general degrees of its then mother institution. With the establishment of the university of East Africa on 29 th June, 1963, the special relationship with the university of London came to a close and degrees of the University of East Africa were instituted. On July 1 st, 1970, Makerere became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses leading to its own awards. Makerere University offers not only day but also evening and external study programmes to a student body of about 35, 000 undergraduates and 3000 postgraduate programmes both Ugandan and foreign. The university transitioned from the Faculty- based to the collegeiate system on 1 st July 2011 and as of Friday 30 th December, 2011, Makerere University officially transformed into a collegiate university with 9 constituent Colleges and as at 1 st July, 2014, 10 constituent Colleges includng the School of Law, all operating as a semi- autonomous units of the university.

SPIRITUAL- RELIGION SUPPORTED There are various worship centres for students within the university premises.

University Mosque St. Francis Chapel University Mosque is located near the university Main gate. • Juma(congregational) prayers are conducted five times every day. • Juma prayers are held every Friday at 1: 00 p. m St. Augustine Chapel St. Francis Chapel located behind the Administration block runs its services every Sunday at 7: 00 a. m, 9: 00 a. m, and 11: 00 a. m- English, Lugbara service at 1: 00 p. m and a youth service at 4: 00 p. m. St. Augustine Chapel is a Roman Catholic church located behind the Main Administration Block. It runs its Holy mass avery Sunday at these times. • First mass- 7: 30 am • Second mass-9: 00 am • Third Mass- 11: 00 am • Fourth Mass- 6: 00 pm

Opening hours; Semester hours Monday- Friday: 8: 00 am- 11: 00 pm Saturdays & Sunday: 8: 30 am- 6: 00 pm Examination period Monday- Friday: 8: 00 am-11: 00 am Saturday: 8: 30 am-9: 00 pm Sunday: 9: 00 am-9: 00 pm At the centre of the university is where the mighty Main Library is found. It is just adjacent to the Freedom Square. As an academic library, it also serves as the National reference library and the legal depository of all works published in Uganda.
