We will now look in detail at one specific method William used to control the Saxons… Once William became king of England, he had to decide how he was going govern the country. He did not want the old English nobles to keep their estates, because they would be powerful and might try to overthrow him. Anyway they had to make room for William's supporters who had been promised land in return for helping him.
The Feudal System
Fill in the Gaps In Normandy when barons or bishops were given land they had to swear an oath of loyalty to the lord who was giving it. The barons or bishops then became tenants-in-chief and agreed to provide ……… (mounted soldiers) to guard castles or fight in wars for their lords. The tenants- in-chief were also responsible for collecting……. . The tenants-in-chief sometimes had their knights living with them in their ……. . . Usually, however, they gave some of their own land to the knights. They kept some land for themselves and shared the rest among the…………who farmed it. In 1085 William conducted the …………. . Survey to find out exactly how much tax everyone should be paying. At the …………… of the ladder were the conquered English peasants who had to do what they were told or pay the price. Castles, Knights, Bottom, Taxes, Peasants , Domesday
Now we will try to recreate the Feudal System Who does each person represent? What is the relationship between each? What are the jobs and responsibilities at each level?
Your Task- Finish for Prep Now imagine that you are an English Peasant in 1091. The feudal system has been operating for about 25 years now since King William I won the battle of Hastings. A monk has come to your village to find out about how the Feudal system works and you are going to tell him. The monks name is Francois of Bologna. He will only listen to you if you start your speech with the following words: “Father Francois, you are my honoured guest. Please allow me to explain the Feudal system to you before you ask any questions of me. I am but a simple farmer…” Try to mention the following: v How the king rewards his followers v How the system helps with law and order v How the King gets money v How the King also will raise an army (get people to fight for him) You can also use pictures to help your explanation.
Plenary- (3 mins) Using what you have learnt this lesson: If these are the answers what are the questions? v The Feudal System v The Domesday Book v Consolidate power v Peasants v Tenants- In Chief Extension: Can you think of any more examples of these?
