Definitions: • Totalitarianism: government aims to have complete/total control over its citizens (political, economic, social, cultural ideas) led by a single leader and political party (Germany, Russia) • Fascism: philosophy that the country is more important than the individual and people must make sacrifices for your country, emphasizes need for a strong dictator to control the people and suppress opposition (Germany, Italy, Russia)

Benito Mussolini - “Il Duce” • Following widespread instability in Italy, Mussolini created the first European Fascist state in 1919. • Blackshirts- Mussolini’s police of armed fascists responsible for attacking opposition and using violence (newspapers, strikes) • Victor Emmanuel III, king of Italy, made Mussolini prime minister in 1922 with unrestricted government power

Why was it popular? • Mussolini was a great speaker promising to end corruption in government and bring stability • Economic problems, inflation in post WWI • Desperate desire for stability/peace • Angry that Italy did not receive more land in peace settlement

The Fascist State • Methods to control people: 1. outlawed all other political parties 2. secret police suppress opposition 3. propaganda/media 4. fascist organizations to promote ideas and control people • Military & Catholic Church allowed to keep independence

Italy under Mussolini • Dictatorship upheld by terror • Mass Propaganda in support of the state (men become soldiers, women as mothers) • Children taught in schools to obey with strict military discipline • Extremely nationalist and took away basic human rights and democracy
