Roald Dahl Characters YEAR 2 ENGLISH HOME LEARNING
Starter What is a compliment? A compliment is when you say or write something nice about someone else. It could be about an aspect of what they look like or their personality. Can you write a compliment about everyone in your house.
Who is Roald Dahl? Roald Dahl is one of Britain’s most famous children’s authors. He has written a lot of books, mostly for children, but some for adults as well. Before he became an author, Dahl served in the Royal Air Force during World War 2 and went on to be a spy for the British Government. He is considered by some to be “one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20 th century". His works for children include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, The Twits, and George's Marvellous Medicine.
The Twits One of Roald Dahl’s more character focused story is The Twits. It is about a horrible husband wife; Mr and Mrs Twit play horrible pranks on each other, and it gets worse and worse throughout the book. This is Mr and Mrs Twit. As you can see, they are not the nicest people.
Task 1 Create a word bank of adjectives to describe Mr and Mrs Twit.
Character Description Read this extract from the Twits If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until it gets so ugly you can hardly bear to look at it. A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely. Do you think your face changes when you have happy or sad thoughts?
Task 2 – An anti-twit good thought poem Today you will be writing an anti-twit good thought poem. The Anti-Twit Good Thoughts Poem should include 10 things that produce happy thoughts. Try to make each line at least 10 words long, this is so you can get lots of descriptive writing in each line. Mr Stocking’s example:
Extra Challenge Draw a picture of your smiley face, with sunbeams round it. Write a positive thought on each one.
