Questions Paul Addresses in Romans 9 -11 Reality: Most Jews have rejected Jesus as the Messiah. Is God breaking his promises to Israel? Why have the Jews fallen? Is there any hope for the Jews? How should Gentiles view their place?

Romans 10: 1 – 11: 6 As we read, ask: Why did the Jews reject the message of Christ? How does that match with what is in their scriptures?

The Word of Faith (Romans 10: 5 -13)

Deuteronomy 30: 10 -12 “For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it? ’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it? ’ But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.

The Word of Faith (Romans 10: 5 -13) Don’t say, Who will ascend into heaven? Christ has come! Don’t say, Who will descend the abyss? Christ has risen! Word is near you, in your heart & mouth. Word of faith has been preached: Believe with your heart Jesus as Lord Confess with your mouth that He is risen

The Word of Faith (Romans 10: 5 -13) Believe/confess, you will be saved (10: 9) Belief Righteousness (justification, ch. 1 -4) Confess Salvation (ch. 5 -8, see 5: 9 -10) Two passages – Isaiah 28 and Joel 2 “Believes” (Is. 28) and “calls” (Joel 2) “whoever” – both passages “There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him. ” (10: 12)

Jews Haven’t Called (Romans 10: 14 -21) What must take place for people to “call on the Lord”? (10: 14 -15) Must believe Must hear Need preacher One must be sent

Why have the Jews not called? Isaiah 52: 7 said the gospel would be preached (10: 15) Have they not heard? Ps 19 says the word has gone to world (10: 18) But Isaiah 53: 1 said that they would not believe (10: 16) Did they not know? Moses warned them in Deut. 32: 21 (10: 19) Isaiah 65: 1 says Moses’ Why haven’t the Jews? warning was coming Disobedient and true, that others would obstinate (10: 21) come to God (10: 20) “So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. ” (10: 17)

By Grace, Not of Works (Romans 11: 1 -6) Has God rejected His people? Paul himself is evidence (11: 1) His people are those He foreknew (11: 2) Story of Elijah (1 Kings 19) Paul feeling like Elijah? (11: 3) God’s people were the faithful (11: 4) In Christ, God has saved a faithful remnant by His grace, not by works of the Law.

After today, are you able to…? Recall where in OT it says “how beautiful are the feet of him who brings good news, ” and “Who has believed our report. ” Identify the reason for the Jews’ fall. Explain what the Elijah story teaches us about who God’s people are.
