� What is Opposition Defiant Disorder (ODD)? � Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a childhood disorder that is characterized by negative, defiant, disobedient � It is often hostile behavior toward adults and authority figures primarily. � In order to be diagnosed, the behaviors must occur for at least a period of 6 months. � A child with ODD may: � Become easily agitated, annoyed or even irritated. � Have frequent temper tantrums. � Argue frequently with adults, particularly the parents since. they are in their lives frequently. � Refuse to obey rules or instructions given to him. � Seem to deliberately try to annoy or aggravate people around them. � Have low self-esteem � Have a low frustration threshold � Seek to blame others for any accidents or bad behavior.

� Social Impacts �May push people away. �May bully people or get bullied. � How it affects learning �It makes it harder for the teacher to help the student. �The student may refuse help or get frustrated instantly if he does not know what to do. �Will refuse advice from teachers.

� What teachers can do �Use a matter-of-fact, neutral tone of voice �Take a short break if you are too angry to �deal with the situation in that moment �Suggest to the student that they take a �break to calm down �Use support staff to help you and the �student �Engage students in a problem solving �process when both parties are calm

� What NOT to do �Use aggressive or authoritarian language to �control the student �Push the student into a corner �Plead with the student to do as you wish, �ie, “Would you please do this for me this one time…” �Threaten the student with “if you don’t do ____, then you won’t get ___”

� Case Study � Jamal was diagnosed with oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) when he was 8 years old. Jamal is now 14 years old in grade 9. Jamal walked into his fourth period math class and did his daily routine before sitting down and starting his work. About 15 minutes into class, I noticed that Jamal was starting to get anxious about getting his work done in time. After about 5 minutes passed and the teacher said stop your work. One of Jamal’s classmates came over and asked him if he had the answer to question 30 but he only got to question 20. Jamal found this very stressful because he was so far behind and flipped out in anger. By taking his anger out yelled and screamed running out of the classroom and slamming the door behind him.

� Two strategies �Take Jamal out into the hall for a quiet one on one environment. The reason is that he will be able to concentrate and not worry about being behind others in work. �Seeing that he is getting anxious a peer tutor should tell him he has 5 extra minutes to be able to finish his work and comprehend the task. The reason is that he usually has a problem controlling his anger over work so use prior knowledge about his ODD
