Once apon a time in a far away land…. lived Bob, Bob the Bacteria.

Once apon a time in a far away land…. lived Bob, Bob the Bacteria. Living in a small plot of land deep in the soil, Bob was accompanied with many friends and family.

For a living…………… Bob and the other bacteria mainly fix and convert nitrogen in the air into other compounds so that the plants can use them. They also protect the grass’ roots.

All of a sudden the bacteria noticed a few metal rods sticking in the ground. Normally the soil that the bacteria live in is dry unless its raining but there was something strange happening. One day excessive amounts of water poured down on the bacteria. It was not rain and they knew that because there was only gushing water pouring onto a few centimeters of the land. One of the little bacteria went above soil to see what was happening

When the little bacteria went above soil she saw the humans! She wanted to

When the little bacteria went above soil she saw the humans! She wanted to go back down to the soil immediately to tell the others! It’s the humans! The humans are pouring water on us!!

Soon after the incident with the humans, Bob was anxious to hear if the same event happened to his extended family in other parts of soil. He picked up his telephone and called his Uncle Walt.

Uncle Walt picked up the phone and they chatted away! Oh Bob, it’s crazy

Uncle Walt picked up the phone and they chatted away! Oh Bob, it’s crazy That is Well call over here! It reminds terrible Bob! me of spring break in Grandma Lou I am 1987 so sorry Cancun all over and see if to hear that. again! After the What? Is the family humans pouredover a everything mixture of water and I alright? Are Sorry there is fine. organic on us, I youfertilizer going to can’t we have been livingbut the just have tostay go, hear life ofthere the party! and You callsome back to have many cousins wait for you have to meet! It’s tell me the news! with all whatever amazing over is here, killing this really, it truly is. There everyone to for is plenty of food leave? everyone andracket! the Alright, tell Everyone Wow that Our neighbors is fine, are dying along sounds we everyone Hey Uncle with. Walt, many might leave exciting! Iintoour others and its bob. I go am justhello! called to soil town. The Grandma just calling to seems to be check. Lou’s up on but check up on killing us off on we have not everyone, its own. everyone, andto. Hello views are amazing!

The humans helped out Uncle Walt’s plot The organic fertilizer really improved life for

The humans helped out Uncle Walt’s plot The organic fertilizer really improved life for those bacteria in the F 1/organic plot. Because of all of the organic materials (manure, fish meal, bone meal) that the fertilizer is made of, it helps support the soil and the bacteria living in it.

After learning about the organic fertilizer that the humans put on, Bob wanted to

After learning about the organic fertilizer that the humans put on, Bob wanted to see what happened to Grandma Lou’s plot

Well I just told Hello grandma Lou, how are you? It’s Bob. this

Well I just told Hello grandma Lou, how are you? It’s Bob. this exact same story to Uncle Walt. Things are ok, the numbers of bacteria are deceasing but its not the humans fault, they only pouring water on us……. you know how the universe works. Everything is the same over here, like I said just a few more cousins to meet but nothing special. The humans poured Oh hello commercial fertilizer sonny! on us and after we ease. Everything dropped on isthem, alrightit seems as though down they here, do not know if you the small just increase ofhave bacteria a fewis due to the commercial more fertilizer or just naturally, cousins to like you said, the meet, universe works in weird nothing too Hello special. ways! How are you?

Bob was then left with fewer bacteria in the plot because of the deaths

Bob was then left with fewer bacteria in the plot because of the deaths that occurred.

Bob did not know what was happening , all of a sudden he was put into a plastic bag. He cried and shrieked for help! Luckily Bob found his phone and was able to call Grandma Lou… Bob: Grandma can you hear me? Grandma: Yes sunny, are you okay? Bob: Im okay grandma Lou, but I’m stuck in a bag from the humans! Grandma Lou: Its okay Bob, so am I and so is your Uncle Walt! I just talked to him! We will be fine. Just hold tight, I have heard of this before, I think that the humans are testing the soil for US, to see how many bacteria are in each soil after the different types of fertilizers are put on! Bob: Why do they care? Grandma Lou: Because Bob that is what human scientists do; they research! Bob: OOOOOooo, so that’s what all of this pouring water on me, organic on Walt, and commercial on you for! Grandma Lou: You got it!

Bob was amazed by these huge humans and he watched everything that they did…

Bob was amazed by these huge humans and he watched everything that they did… Bob thinks to himself…. …. one of the humans is filling a beaker with what seems to be distilled water. …. One girl said something like “serial dilution”- this must be a serial dilution! …. Another girl took 1 cc of a soil sample from my bag which is labeled “NF” for no fertilizer, which means only water was poured over our soil. …. She placed it into one of the five test tubes and then shook it. …. Then 1 cc was taken from that dilution and put into the next test tube which is then shaken and the step repeats until the water mixed with soil has been diluted 4 times. …. This exact same thing was preformed with the two other bags of soil labeled “F 1” and “F 2” for the organic fertilizer plot and for the commercial fertilizer plot where my uncle and grandma live!!

Bob continues to watch with a close eye as the humans continue with their

Bob continues to watch with a close eye as the humans continue with their tests…. Bob still thinks to himself…. …. they then take a drop of the diluted soil and place it on the proper Petri film plate. …. Then they press down on the Petri film plate to spread out the bacteria colonies and wait for about 2 days. …. 2 days later they came back and counted the amount of red dots on the plate, and that was how many bacteria colonies that were in the soil were found. …. Next they used an equation to figure out how much bacteria was in the original soil sample. …. And the girls then shouted “Hooray we did it!”

After all of the equations were solved and the amount of bacteria in each

After all of the equations were solved and the amount of bacteria in each of the soils were found they were then put into a graph so that the data could be easily compared!

Conclusion Hypothesis: If organic and commercial fertilizers are put into two separate plots of

Conclusion Hypothesis: If organic and commercial fertilizers are put into two separate plots of land than the amount of bacteria in the organic plot will increase much more then in the commercial plot. Our hypothesis was proven to be correct. According to our graph and data the averaged “P” values to each of the soils told us that we were right. The averaged P value of the NF plot was. 58 and the average P value of the F 2 was. 88. From each of these two numbers, it essentially means that the fertilizer and water did not change anything in both plots. Statistically in the organic fertilizer plot (F 1) there was a. 13 chance that the organic fertilizer did infact make the bacteria numbers increase by a large amount. This proved our hypothesis to be right!!
