We have completed a busy summer with camps, judging, the fair, and the Grade A Celebration. We would like to share our appreciation and gratitude to all of the 4 -H members, advisors, and families for everything you do for our 4 -H program throughout the year. All of our events would not be possible without all of you and we thank you! Congratulations to all members on their projects, placings, and state fair participation and awards. Keep up the great work! This is out last newsletter for 2018. End of Year Club Packets New Volunteers and Club Information Now is the time of year when prospective members start calling looking for a club. Please let Erin know if your club is accepting new members, where you meet, if you have cloverbuds, if you specialize in specific livestock or projects, and a main advisor name and contact information. We are always looking for new volunteers to serve in clubs or other groups. Interested individuals should fill out a potential volunteer application, set up an interview, complete a background check, and attend a new advisor training. All volunteer background checks fees are eligible for reimbursement from the University. Please submit the original receipt and the form found in the volunteer application. 2019 Volunteer Background Checks and Fingerprints Letters were sent out recently to volunteers who were selected to have their fingerprints done for the 2019 4 -H year. This is a requirement from the University and must be done in order to be considered a volunteer. Fingerprints should be completed by December 31, 2018. If your fingerprints are not completed by that date, you will not be eligible to volunteer. Fees for fingerprinting can be reimbursed through the University. Please bring your original receipt and the reimbursement form to the Extension Office. Fingerprints can be done anywhere that offers the service but some of the paperwork sent out in the letters only pertains to North Central Educational Services. Seneca County 4 -H Family Newsletter Club end of year packets are ready for pick up at the Extension Office. These packets contain member/volunteer certificates, pins, honor club forms, and important information and forms for secretary and treasurer books. Tenured volunteers also have gifts that can be picked up when the club packet is picked up. Secretary and Treasurer Books Secretary and Treasurer books and Honor Club forms are due to the Extension Office by January 14, 2019. 4 -H Projects and Senior Pictures There a few projects and posters left from the fair. If you have not picked up your project or poster please do so ASAP. There are some senior pictures here in the office as well that can be picked up. Items not picked up but the end of the year, will be disposed of. 4 -H Family Handbook In addition to the Seneca County 4 -H Family Handbook being offered and downloadable on our website, https: //seneca. osu. edu/ and a hard copy being provided to all advisors, we are going to be offering pre-orders for any members and their families that might want to purchase a hard copy of the Family Handbook are $5. 00/piece and cash or checks made payable to OSU Extension will be accepted. Orders will be due by Wednesday, November 28, 2018. Club Officer Training There will be an officer training this year for anyone who is an elected officer, recreation leader, health and safety speaker, etc. The training will be held in February or March 2019. Look for more detailed information coming soon and in our next newsletter. 4 -H Club Meeting Visits New for the upcoming 2019 year, advisory council members will be visiting clubs to help support and advise on club structure and observe how club meetings are run. It is our hope and intention that the clubs of Seneca County are running with a similar structure and in a consistent manner. Information on best practices will be sent out before club meetings begin at the first of the year. Once you have set your schedule of meeting times and dates for your club for the 2019 4 -H year, please be sure to provide a copy to the Extension Office. 2 OSU Extension, Seneca County

4 -H Club Audits We would like to bring to your attention that starting in 2020, we will be randomly selecting around eleven 4 -H clubs to be audited by the Seneca County 4 -H Advisory Council. This will place 4 -H clubs on an approximate four year rotation. This is a way to ensure all clubs are following the correct financial guidelines as suggested by the Extension Office. It will also protect the treasurer, club, advisors, and Extension Office in the case of any financial issues or challenges by others. Audits that do not pass inspection will require further investigation. Mandatory Policy 1. 50 Training Volunteers, please mark your calendars to attend one of the mandatory Policy 1. 50 trainings and 4 -H update. Any active volunteers must attend a training to be a volunteer in 2019. Training locations will be announced closer to the dates. • Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 6: 00 p. m. • Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 12: 00 p. m. • Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 6: 00 p. m. • Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 9: 00 a. m. Teen Workshop A teen workshop will be provided for all teens and parents who are interested and want to know more about how to get involved and what opportunities are available to them in the 4 -H program. This will cover county, state, and national clubs, award trips, and scholarships. The teen workshop is for any 4 -H teen 13 years and older and will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Extension Office from 6 -8 p. m. There is no cost to attend! To view a flier visit our website https: //seneca. osu. edu/news/teenworkshop-0 Award Trip Scholarship Applications There are scholarships available to help with the cost of some of the award trips offered through 4 -H. The scholarship applications are due to the Extension Office by Monday, December 10, 2018. Scholarships will be available on our website and in the Extension Office soon. 2018 National 4 -H Week and Fall Paper Clover Campaign National 4 -H week will be held on October 7 -13, 2018. Visit https: //4 -h. org/ to get ideas on how you can celebrate! In conjunction to National 4 -H week, TSC stores will be holding their annual Fall Paper Clover Campaign, which will run October 3 -14, 2018. Visit our local Tiffin Tractor Supply Company store and purchase a clover. The profits from the Paper Clover Campaign go back directly to the 4 -H program. Thank you for your support! The Tiffin Tractor Supply store is seeking Seneca County 4 -H clubs to help sell paper clovers. When clubs are present in-store during the event, donations increase by more than 40%! At this time you can also display your animals or demonstrate projects to promote 4 -H and all it has to offer. If your club participates, you will be eligible to enter the TSC Paper Clover Participation Sweepstakes, in which winning clubs will receive a $100 TSC gift card. Carving New Ideas (CNI) It’s time to register for Carving New Ideas! This fall camp tradition hosted by OSU’s Collegiate 4 -H Club is having “CSI at CNI” November 16 -18 at 4 -H Camp Ohio. 4 -H members in grades 8 -12 are invited to join in this great weekend. Carving New Ideas is a camping opportunity for older youth, concentrating on the principles of critical thinking and program facilitation. The focus of this year’s camp will center around mystery and investigation while enhancing leadership skills. The registration deadline is Monday, October 22, 2018. 2019 Important Camp Information and Camp Counselor Information The dates for the 2019 Seneca County 4 -H Junior Camp at Kelleys Island will be known in October, so be looking for updates. Again, for the 2019 year, there will be no full camp scholarships given out. We highly encourage you to start thinking of ways you can save up for camp now. It could be a fundraiser with your club or saving a little each month. Scholarships at most will be half of the cost of camp per camper/counselor. Camp counselor applications will be due to the Extension Office by December 10, 2018. Interviews for counselors will take place on December 27 and 28 from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. First year counselors will be considered counselors in training (CIT’s) and will be required to help with Cloverbud Camp. Seneca County CARTEENS If you are interested in being a teen instructor for CARTEENS, you do not need to be in 4 -H, but you must be at least 14 years old. We meet every third Monday of the month except July at 6: 30 p. m. at the Extension Office and would love to have you join our team. Teen facilitators teach other teen traffic offenders about speeding, operating a vehicle impaired, and distracted driving. Being a CARTEEN is a great way to improve public speaking skills and learn more about teaching tools and not to mention there are gas cards and fun trips to Washington D. C. that you can earn. Seneca County 4 -H Family Newsletter 2019 Quality Assurance Jr. Leadership News Every member taking livestock (not horses or dogs) must attend quality assurance training. First year members taking a livestock project must attend a county wide quality assurance session and a parent/guardian must be present. There are four options for completing quality assurance training: • Attend one of the county wide trainings offered in Seneca Co. County wide quality assurance will be offered on the following dates with some locations to be determined. All first year members taking a livestock project must attend one of these sessions with a parent/guardian present. The test out option will be offered again this year only at the county wide options listed below. Youth ages 15 -18 years who pass the quality assurance test can test out of their annual quality assurance program permanently. These ages are as of January 1, 2019 - a youth’s 4 -H age. • Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 6 p. m. , test out starting at 5 p. m. • Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 6 p. m. , test out starting at 5 p. m. at Old Fort High School • Sunday, April 28, 2018 at 4 p. m. , test out starting at 3 p. m. • Attend a qualified QA training with/in your club Certified assistant instructors will be able to teach QA at the club level. If they choose to open it up to other to attend, Katie will compile a list and you will be notified. • Attend a qualified QA training in another Ohio county. Fees may apply. Call the Extension Office for dates and times. • Attend a qualified QA training at an Ohio 4 -H approved event: Jr. Swine Day, Beef Expo, Dairy Palooza, Champions Choice Lamb Camp, etc. QA must be completed by a county deadline of May 1, 2019. No exceptions. Junior Leadership is for any 4 -H teen 14 years and older. As soon as you turn 14 you can join Junior Leadership; it does not have to be by January 1 st. We welcome any and all new members every month and we would love to have you join us. Junior Leadership focuses a lot on community service. The Junior Leadership group goes on teen exchanges with other counties though out Ohio, helps with project judging and 4 -H awareness in schools, helps with the annual Tiffin Rotary auction, hosts Santa’s Workshop, participates at the Family Fest at the Tiffin YMCA and the 4 -H Kick-off at the fairgrounds, helps with the milkshake stand puts on a square dance during the fair, and provides other fun opportunities for teens. Junior Leadership meets every second Monday of the month at 6: 30 p. m. at the Extension Office. Come check us out! 4 Gaga Ball Tournament Junior Leadership will be hosting a gaga ball tournament on Sunday, October 28 at 2 p. m. at Oakley Park in Tiffin. This event is offered to anyone who is 13 -18 years old. You can register as an individual or you can have a team comprised of four people. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in both tournaments. Registration cost is $5. 00/team if registered by October 22 and $10. 00/team if registered after the deadline. Registration cost is $1. 00/individual if registered by October 22 and $3. 00/individual if registered after the deadline. Junior Leadership Annual Candy Sale The Junior Leadership Club will be holding their annual candy sale. They will be making buckeyes and chocolate peanut clusters. Orders will be taken November 12 -December 10. If you are interested in purchasing candy, please contact a Junior Leadership member or advisor. Order forms will also be located in the Extension Office and forms can be placed in the white mailbox located by the door of the Extension Office. Deliveries will be made just in time for Christmas. Santa’s Workshop Junior Leadership will be holding Santa’s Workshop again this year on Saturday, December 8 from 1: 30 -4: 30 p. m. . The workshop is open to kids in the 1 st-4 th grades. Interested kids do not have to be a member of 4 -H to join in the fun! The cost is just $10. 00 per child. Registration is due by Friday, November 30, 2018 and checks should be made payable to Seneca County Jr. Leadership. Registrations will be located in the Extension Office and registrations and payments can be dropped off in the white mailbox located by the door of the Extension Office. Landing Point Financial Group- is a locally owned and operated franchise. They have 24 employees with locations in Avon, Tiffin, Bellevue, and Akron Ohio. The Tiffin office is located at 6 Main St. This group has supplied pizza and pop for the past four years for the annual 4 -H Kick Off held at the fairgrounds for hundreds of 4 -H advisors, members, and their families to come for a night of games and refreshments. They also support the Seneca County Lamb show and the livestock sale. Tim and Sarah Hessick: were born and raised on farms in Seneca County. They grew up in 4 -H and both of them were advisors of their own clubs for many years. They are proud parents of two children. Courtney and Miranda’s three children Dalton, Alayna, and Reed are following in their parents and grandparents footsteps by joining 4 -H. They have donated awards many years to the swine department and you see Tim in the swine show ring each year. They also have donated a memorial rose for 4 -Hers’s modeling in the style revue for 24 years in memory of their daughter Monica. Thanks to Sarah’s interest in keeping 4 -H members sewing in Seneca County, she has helped with a sewing clinic the past two years. Jr. Fair News from Nicole Open House There will be a Jr. Fair Board open house held on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 4 -5: 30 p. m. at the fairgrounds. Interested members ages 14 -18, who exhibit miscellaneous or livestock projects at the Seneca County Fair, can attend the open house to learn more about Jr. Fair Board and serving on Jr. Fair Board Applications Jr. Fair Board applications will be accepted through December 1, 2018 and interviews will be scheduled for December 2, 2018. The application is available on our website seneca. osu. edu under Seneca County Fair. Steer Weigh-In Steer weigh in for the 2018 Seneca Co. Fair will be on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 7: 30 -9: 30 a. m. All market steers, market heifers, and dairy steers must be nose printed and weighed-in. You must use a halter to lead your steer(s). Advisors: please share this information with any new steer exhibitors in your club. As many of you know, Nicole Arnold has resigned from her position as the Jr. Fair Coordinator. We thank Nicole for all her hard work and dedication over the last four years.
